"You sense that Djokovic needs a bit of a break, the odd fortunate point, or for Wawrinka to throw in a error to give him an opening that he could take advantage of."

Bravo! A touch of razzle-dazzle from Djokovic as he sprints along the baseline and somehow retrieves a Wawrinka overhead. He attempts to lob the Swiss even though he's facing the spectators on the sidelines rather than the court. It's too early for the Serb to put on his top hat, however, because it's Wawrinka who wins the point - a deep volley doing the damage.

But to deuce we go, with Wawrinka gaining advantage before being pulled back courtesy of another rip-roaring Djokovic winner. The Swiss once more moves to within a point of holding and takes the game. Djokovic netting with the court at his mercy.

There were moments during the opening game of this set when Djokovic looked like a beaten man; shoulders slumped, cheeks puffing in and out, as one point then another slipped by. But the Serb's chest is now puffed out and he's swaying from side to side as he crouches to return serve.

Despite the positive body language, however, Djokovic can't prevent Wawrinka nudging 40-15 ahead. A forehand into the tramlines from Wawrinka, but there's no drama to talk about here. Djokovic returning long and we're even stevens.

"Nothing gets a night-session crowd going like the smell of an upset and there's a Davis Cup feel inside Road Laver Arena now, with the neutrals seemingly siding with Wawrinka. Nothing personal, I think, but they have seen a lot of Djokovic winning here over the last three years. The Serb fans have certainly not given up, mind. Plenty of "Idemoooo Nole!" flying around."

If Djokovic is to reach his 15th consecutive Grand Slam semi-final he must do so in five sets. He has looked down and out against Wawrinka before, of course, and lived to tell the tale but can he regain control of this tie to write his own script?

Exquisite shot-making from Wawrinka as that single-handed backhand comes into play, making Djokovic look as if he has cement in his trainers. At 30-30 Wawrinka lets a chance slip, finding the tramlines instead of the target, but Djokovic double faults. Deuce. Shock. Silence. Djokovic serves into the Wawrinka ribcage to ease to advantage and the scampering Wawrinka then plonks a forehand into the barrier.

"Djokovic looks intimidated. He's on the end of so much pressure from Wawrinka, who is exploding into his shots with such power. Djokovic is quiet and looks shell-shocked. He's got a great poker-face and has a steely competitive spirit, but all the initiative is with Wawrinka."

Crisp serving from Djokovic but as the pair stride towards their chairs for the changeover there's a sense that's it all a little too late for him in this set. Wawrinka's faithful followers chanting his name... Everyone expecting the Swiss romp through this third set.

Djokovic tilts his head to the left and then to the right. The Serb giving off signals that he's up for the fight, but he lets a 0-30 lead slip and Wawrinka greets an ace with a guttural roar as he skips 40-30 up. Errors flying from the Djokovic racquet - he once again goes long - and the Swiss's lead is a handsome one.

A little bit of breaking news to bring you. British number two Dan Evans has been left out of the Davis Cup squad to face the United States later this month.

Evans played in the last four Great Britain ties but has been replaced by Kyle Edmund, 19, who will vie with James Ward for the second singles slot.

Andy Murray looks likely to team up with Colin Fleming in the doubles for the tie, which takes place on clay in San Diego from 31 January, while Dom Inglot has been called up as a reserve for the first time.

  17. Wawrinka breakspublished at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2014

Djokovic may be rattled but he is still a showman. A feather soft volley at the net on the opening point has the crowd admiring the Serb's soft hands. But Wawrinka is proving to be a pest who can't be tamed. We progress to 30-30. Wawrinka then pulls Djokovic this way and that before leaving the second seed stranded on the baseline with a sublime backhand winner for break point. Djokovic roars, all in frustration. In this set, however, the Serb's resistance is made of tissue paper. He balloons a forehand long and the crowd and Wawrinka celebrate wildly.

Wawrinka punches his racquet strings after letting Djokovic ratchet a 0-30 lead, but the eighth seed's can always rely on his trusted serve. An ace helps Wawrinka to 30-30. The pair then proceed to test each other's backhands, slicing and dicing from the baseline, and it's another uncharacteristic error from Djokovic. But a double fault - Wawrinka's third of the match - sows some seeds of doubt. The Swiss pulls through from deuce, though, with Djokovic unable to return two hot, hot serves.
