"Can you imagine seeing Nadal at the other end of the net? I don't know how you're supposed to come up with a gameplan. Djokovic has it, he can do it, but I just don't think Federer can. He knows if he could get rid of this guy once he could win another Slam."

"The difference between Federer now and the Federer from a few years ago is that when he starts making errors he makes them in groups. He makes two or three in a row and against Nadal you just can't do that."

On Sunday's final against Stanislas Wawrinka, which will be live on BBC Two, Nadal said: "I have a tough opponent in front [of me]. Wawrinka is playing amazing, he should come to this final with big confidence.

"I never thought about having 13 Grand Slams so I never thought about having 14. The one thing I can swear is that I'm going to try my best. I need to keep playing great. His serve is huge, and he's hitting the ball really hard. I need to play aggressive and play the same way I played tonight."

"In the first set was tough," adds Nadal. "It's true I had a few break points before the tie-break and I think we played really tough rallies at the end of the first set and I think I resisted well.

"He was taking the ball early, it was a difficult thing, I tried to resist. Tonight I played the best match of the tournament so I'm very happy for that. Too much talk about the blister. The blister is OK. The problem is the position of the blister. it's difficult to cover. We try to make bandage shorter so I'm very happy."

Nadal strolls over to have a chat to interviewer Jim Courier. "First of all playing with Roger is a special feeling," said the Spaniard. "He's probably the opponent when I go on court I get emotional feelings.

"We've played a lot of times for important matches. He's a great champion and it's a great honour to be in the same era like him."

"Not a classic by their standards perhaps but what a wonderful contest to see every time they take to the court against each other. Nadal is formidable and he goes in against Stan Wawrinka as a heavy favourite as he's never lost to him."

Federer wastes little time in packing up his things and heading off court to applause from the crowd. The former world number one has had a decent tournament, beating Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, but his hoodoo against Nadal in Grand Slams remains.

Federer successfully challenges a call on a Nadal backhand was called in but was comfortably wide of the tramlines to move to 40-15, but a couple of short balls are ruthlessly punished by Nadal and we're at deuce.

Another error from Federer brings up Nadal's first match point, but the Swiss goes big with a backhand down the line and the Spaniard can only knock it into the net. Deuce.

Here comes another break point, following another bit of magic from Nadal, looping a forehand pass down the line. This time he takes it as Federer fires way long. Nadal punches the air and flashes a smile over to his box.

Federer completely mis-times a backhand topspin volley and looks on in frustration as it lands in the net. That pretty much sums up his night. The Swiss looks to have run out of ideas to beat his arch-rival.

"You search for historical data when these two play against each other, you look for the next piece of history they're making. If Nadal was to win this title, he would become only the third man to win all the Slams at least twice."

Federer kicks off with an ace, but that's very much as good as it gets in this game as he's soon facing another break point. Another forehand error gifts Nadal the game and moves him to within two games of victory.

Federer shouts at himself in frustration as he makes two bad errors on his forehand to gift Nadal two break points. He saves the first with a good serve and thinks he's at deuce before Nadal successfully challenges that his next serve was out. Back comes Federer with a brilliant serve on the replayed point and then brings up game point with a lovely volley. He gets the game, too, as Nadal's forehand breaks down. Huge save for Federer.

It's taken over two hours, and the threat of defeat staring him in his face, for Federer to rustle up his first break points of the match. The Swiss misses out on the first, as a backhand goes just long, but he gets the second courtesy of a Nadal error. There's life in this match yet.

More break points for Nadal as Federer looks a broken man. The Spaniard takes the first of two as Federer sticks a backhand volley in the net. The Australian Open final beckons for Nadal.
