"Fabio we are in your head," they were singing in the early stages of the first set. It turns out that the British fans have woken some sort of monster within as they were stumbling around the Italian's psyche.

Not a hint of his customary wobbles as Fognini serves out, spitting fire with his groundstrokes, particularly his monster off-forehand.

"At 5-3 you'd expect the set to be over. But I'm not convinced Fognini is going to hold his serve."

  5. Fognini breakspublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 6 April 2014

"Grazie, grazie," says umpire Pascal Maria as he attempts to quiet down the home fans. He has a job on his hands. He upgrades to "silenzio" with little effect.

They are getting boisterous because their man is 15-30 to the good with a second serve to look at. Fognini lands a backhand right on the junction of baseline and sideline and Andy Murray cannot dig it out. Two break points.

A wonderful volley off his ankles helps Murray save the first and he then flashes a backhand down the line. Tremendous skill to do it, but also tremendous nerves to go for those shots at break point down.

He is going to need something similar though. Third break point and this time Murray falters. He regathers his ball toss to whistles from the crowd and his second serve bounces out off the top of the tape.

Fognini to serve for the set next and he aims another gesture at that British fan he has been 'bantering' as they change over.

Andy Murray is right in the path of the storm now. Fabio Fognini is bulging of eye and bicep, hitting winners and breathing fire as the crowd roar him on. A comfortable hold and Fognini is ahead on the scoreboard for the first time.

  10. Fognini breakspublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 6 April 2014

Turns out you won't like him when he is angry. Fabio Fognini goes all Bruce Banner, striding off his chair to break to love. There is an extra yard of pace to his scurrying around the court and now the Italian fans are getting their revenge giving the Scot the bird as he double faults.

    Game very much on.

"Fognini has an abundance of talent, sometimes too much. Sometimes he has too many options and plays the wrong shot. Sometimes you feel like telling him 'that point you just won was a great point but you don't get a bonus for it'".

"There's two-way banter going on between Fognini and a Great Britain fan. It's a two-way process and it's clearly distracting Fognini."

A centrefold of a drop-shot from Fabio Fognini is the highlight of the game, hit from back behind the baseline and dying perfectly after scraping over the wire. He holds for the loss of one point. But the most interesting stuff comes at the end of the game.

Fognini aims an uncomplimentary gesture at a member of the crowd. It turns out a Brit has been singing "Fabio, we are in your head" at the Italian. Quite accurately it seems.

Fabio Fognini chucks the textbook out of the window as he hops up into a mid-air disjointed backhand. Turns out that he should stick to the manual as the resulting shot lands a good couple of metres wide and long.

Murray gets more joy as he targets that wing once again and then rounds off a game to love with an ace.

For all the ups and downs at Fabio's end of the court, Murray has been in clinically consistent form. Very solid and businesslike.

Fabio Fognini rattles speedily to 40-0, but, despite putting a little extra pace on his second serve, his tee-off is far from watertight against as sharp a returner as Andy Murray.

Murray clambers all over his serve, racing to the net to pull back a point, but is eventually edged out by Fognini's disguised little glance at the net which drops dead as a doornail.

Step aboard the Fabio Fognini experience, no under-12s or dicky hearts though as it is a bit of a rollercoaster ride.

The Italian middles a forehand from deep behind his own baseline for a clear winner for 15-30 and just keeps on swinging to open up break point at 30-40.

Onto a downswing as Fognini wastes the chance by burying a second-serve return a good six inches deep below the cord.

But there are plenty of twanging wrist ligaments thrown into a forehand by Fognini in the next rally to earn another break point. Murray saves with a bruiser of an ace.

Toe-to-toe rallying, both players probing with angles from off the protractor, as Murray moves to advantage. Fognini is into the net to wallop away a volley and the crowd lap it up. Plenty of air-horn with a side order of whistle.

This is 24-carat stuff. Rallies full of pinging power and shuttling retrieves and Fognini is playing a full part. Ominious for Great Britain even if Murray hangs on.

Which he finally does as Fognini, pushes a forehand long.
