Stephanie Siu:, external Masha's serving is all over the shop. I'm 100% behind Bouchard. Great to watch (and much more quiet than her opponent).

Simeon David Weller:, external If @geniebouchard is this good at 20... i see no reason why she cant go on to win all the Slams!

Eugenie Bouchard's groundstrokes are still spitting off the red clay like fat off a hot pan. Especially on the forehand.

Twice in successive rallies, Maria Sharapova is caught out by the pace as the ball kicks like a donkey and she rushes her reply out of play. That sees her drop from an awkward 15-30 up to 40-30 down.

Sharapova doesn't get anywhere near Bouchard's final wallop, straining muscles and graphite at a blur that keeps on going to the back boards.

Ben Amadi-Emina:, external Sharapova needs to win the second set and improve on her serve to steady her feral nerves. She needs this Grand Slam.

  4. Bouchard breakspublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 5 June 2014

Maria Sharapova pulls the first ace of the match out of her quiver at 30-30. Impeccable timing.

But the booby prize follows as she double-faults on set point and Bouchard has deuce to work from.

Bouchard is pumped and pummelled to bring up a second set point. Another double fault follows! Sharapova presses out wide, too wide, to let it slip south.

Bouchard with a bicep-buster of a drive volley brings up break point, she can't take it though.

This game is determinedly keeping out of both women's grasp as they try and grab it by the scruff.

Sharapova wastes a third set point and sees off Bouchard's second break point with a second-serve ace.

As it wears on Bouchard is coming on stronger though. A third break point as he stretches Sharapova wide on the forehand side and this time it sticks.

Sharapova clumps long and she is dragged back into the fray.

Eugenie Bouchard keeps her cards on the table in the second set.

The kitchen sink, dishwasher, washing machine, scrubbing brush and marigolds will be thrown at the Sharapova serve in the next game as she attempts to stay alive.

Nothing creaky about that from Maria Sharapova. The Russian holds to love and is a game away from the second set.

After a second set, comes a third and Sharapova has been making herself cosy in deciding sets in Paris. She has beaten Garbine Muguruza and Sam Stosur in her last two matches after losing the opener.

Eugenie Bouchard is still bashing the fuzz off the ball. She holds to 15 and will have another look at that creaky Sharapova serve.

She might need to crack it as well in the next game to keep the second set in the balance.

Whatever the result by the end of this one, I doubt Maria Sharapova will have the sort of straightforward straight-sets wins over Eugenie Bouchard that she enjoyed in their first two meetings again in her career.

The Canadian is as tenacious as a terrier and makes Sharapova defend a break point and expend a few thousands watts of nervous energy before she can have her hold of serve.

The Sharapova serve is turning a little feral under the pressure as well. Plenty of re-gathered ball tosses and netted first attempts.

"You fancy that the longer the game goes on then the veteran, or the one with the more experience will come through. Sharapova must be thinking just keep Bouchard out of court"

Disposing of Maria Sharapova in a game is like getting rid of nuclear waste.

Wrap it in lead, coat it in concrete, bury it half a mile deep and still you can't sleep entirely comfortably.

Many other players would have written the game off at 40-0. Not the Russian. She needles and nurdles her way to deuce. Eugenie Bouchard is stout in the face of two break point, but after being harried into conceding a third, double-faults.

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"Anyone who watched Sharapova's last two matches will know it is best not to count her out after one measly set. The Russian's serve has been so inconsistent since she had shoulder surgery a couple of years ago that her matches are often scattered with breaks of serve, but her will has, if anything, become stronger. That is usually enough to get her through, but Bouchard might just be able to match her in that department."

Maria Sharapova's serve is like a parachute hanging off the back of her dragster of a game. The Russian twice flunks the baseline test, burying her serves into the net on successive double faults to give Eugenie Bouchard 30-40 and a break point.

That is four on the board already for the Russian.

Bouchard takes advantage, drawing in Sharapova to the net before patting a volley back past her and into the acres left behind.

  13. Sharapova breakspublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 5 June 2014

Maria Sharapova finds the postage stamp corner of Eugenie Bouchard's side of the court with a forehand winner to bring up 15-40 and two break points.

Eugenie Bouchard has that winners' trick of raising her level of play for the most important points and hammers away a mid-court bounce to pull one back.

Sharapova has been pulling that sort of stunt since Bouchard was in junior school though. A wrong-footing backhand fools the Canadian to give Sharapova an early break and a route map back into the match.

  17. Bouchard wins the first setpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 5 June 2014

Is that the jangle of Eugenie Bouchard's nerves? The Canadian's cross-court forehand strays wide to give Maria Sharapova 30-40 and a chance to break back.

First serve flies six inches long, but that is a potent mix of grit and 24-carat quality. A peppy second serve from Bouchard is followed by a pinpoint backhand winner, down the line over the high part of the net, to move us to deuce.

It must have been the chink of champagne flutes rather than nerves. Bouchard is deep in the groove, whipping away a forehand winner after working over Sharapova and taking the set with a big tee-off that Sharapova blocks into the net.

Maria Sharapova looks accusingly at the surface and up to her box in search of some comfort and support as she slips to 0-30.

Her ball toss is not providing any solace for her. The yips are bubbling to the surface and she double-faults to give Eugenie Bouchard three break points.

One saved, but the second is nailed by Bouchard. The Canadian steps in and chucks her bodyweight behind a cross-court backhand, injecting it with an overdose of pace that does for Sharapova.

Bouchard to serve for the set next.
