That's a wrap, ladies and gentlemen. There is nothing to see here other than waffle. There will be more live text commentary later in the day of the women's semi-finals.

China's Peng Shuai and 10th seed Caroline Wozniacki will begin their fight for the final from around 18:45 BST, and at about 20:45 BST Serena Williams will continue her title defence, this time by taking on Russia's Ekaterina Makarova.

"After his defeat to Marin Cilic in the US Open quarter-finals, Tomas Berdych raised the possibility that he might soon start working with Andy Murray's former coach Ivan Lendl.

"Lendl and Murray went their separate ways in March, as Lendl didn't want to spend as many weeks on tour as Murray required.

"But he did say at the start of the US Open that he could return to coaching in future, and linking up with Berdych would give him the chance to work with a fellow Czech."

Berdych said he had his "fingers crossed" over a Lendl link-up in his post-match interview - read the full report here.

That's the semi-final line ups sorted. Roger Federer (and Stefan Edberg) will take on Marin Cilic (and Goran Ivanisevic) while Novak Djokovic (and Boris Becker) must pit their wits against Kei Nishikori (and Michael Chang). Should be interesting. Very interesting.

A match of what ifs for Monfils, who was two sets up and had two match points. Three hours and 20 minutes of bamboozling and enthralling tennis. In the end it was perhaps the 10 double faults which proved costly.

"I started to serve huge in the fifth, it was my best set serving," adds Federer. "You've just got to give it all you have each point. I hope, and think, you guys enjoyed it.

Federer on his semi-final opponent Marin Cilic: "Marin's played some great tennis in New York over the years and he's improved under (coach) Goran (Ivanisevic). I'm looking forward to playing Marin, he's a great guy, we had a tough match in Tornonto. We know what to expect but I'm looking forward to the match."

"Unbelievable. Incredible," says Federer with not a word of hyperbole. "I think it was awesome from both sides. Thanks for supporting us, it helped me to get it done for sure.

"I still thought the finishing line was far for Gael (when he was two sets up) and I knew I could play better. When I was down two match points I thought 'this is it', go down fighting, don't miss a shot and let him have it but I served well and stayed in the match and somehow turned it around. I felt great in the fifth."

Monfils has enough left in the tank to approach the net, but Federer simply passes him. The five-time champion rattles off another two points quickly. Three match points. A big serve down the 'T', Monfils chasing fresh air. A fist-pumping celebration from the second seed. What a match.

Monfils breathing heavily, looking like a man who has run a marathon in oppressive heat. He races to a 40-0 lead and although Federer eats into the lead, the Frenchman easily hold. Federer, perhaps, conserving energy.

There's a better chance of fish learning to climb trees than Monfils dragging himself back into contention from here. Another stylish volley from Federer takes him to within a game of what would be an incredible victory.

"Monfils is looking a little bit petulant. There's a mutter to himself, but that's not a bad thing when it comes to Monfils as I think it's how he keeps himself going. He can't be thinking that he had a 2-0 lead. He has to start from scratch. The unforced errors are flying off the racquet of Monfils."

Monfils spraying wide, spraying long. He looks towards his racquet, searching for answers but he will find none. Three break points Federer. The Swiss needs just the one, he steps forward, crunching a winning forehand into the corner. The fat lady is gargling some mouthwash and is preparing to come on stage.

Federer with cat-like reflexes at the net even after over three hours of trouble and toil. Monfils attempts an eye-catching in-between-the-legs shot but, in truth, he had given up on the point because there was no hope of passing the second seed. A comfortable serve for Federer.

Chasey: "Need to go to bed but Federer is keeping me busy!"

Ahmed: "Monfils showing incredible poise. Unfortunately Federer's the people's champion. What a legend."

Alex Rose: "Can't believe Roger Federer is only 33. Seems like he has been around the game for so long."

Aidan Mifsud: "When Monfils plays even the errors are exciting."

Aidan, you're not wrong. The flamboyant Frenchman has got to be the best value for money on the circuit. Just checking out the new balls is an art form.

The Monfils double faults in double digits and, at 15-30, Federer has an opportunity to kill off his opponent. But the Swiss carelessly nets for 30-30 and Monfils comes through the adversity by serving big and serving hard.

The Frenchman's legs have turned to guacamole. Monfils can offer no resistance. He swings wildly at a Federer serve at 40-15 and turns towards the baseline, shoulders slumped, to prepare to launch some serves.

"That's the first indication for me that Monfils is looking a little bit deflated. Federer took a long bathroom break after the fourth set and I don't know if that's had an effect. Maybe that's shifted the momentum even more. That's a sloppy game from Monfils, but Federer stayed really consistent in that game."

Here's something to chew on. Federer has come back from two sets down on eight occasions and has won 22 and lost 19 five-set matches. Monfils has won 12 of 20 so it's the Frenchman who enjoys a better record when a match goes the distance.

Federer nicks two early points, Monfils swaying like a punch-drunk heavyweight, and drills a tired backhand into the tramlines. Three break points. Monfils has one big punch left in him, but no more than that as he goes long once again.

"Monfils didn't recover from losing those two set points. He needs to mentally re-group and start this fifth set fresh and strong."
