  1. Post update

I'm still trying to take stock of what just happened. Murray's best performance on clay? Almost certainly. Rafa on the wane? Sadly I think that's probably the case too. But don't forget he had not lost a set in Madrid this week before today.

That Novak Djokovic will still go into the French Open as the strong favourite is beyond question. But on that form, Murray must have a great chance of adding to his two major titles this summer.

Anyone for strawberries and cream? Goodnight.

  2. Post update

Murray seemed incredibly relaxed there while giving his views to Sky Sports. Will he play in Rome next week? He says he'll fly there tomorrow and then decide.

  3. Post update

Murray says being married has been "nice". The Scot adds: "A lot of people tell me this is the honeymoon period and it gets harder but we've been together a long time. I've always said if you personal stuff and private life is good that helps your performances on the court."

  4. Andy Murray

    Andy Murray

"I played a good match, made very few errors and changed the height of the ball extremely well, which was part of the reason why he was mistiming a few shots. I used the second serve into the forehand a lot and that worked well because I was able to get him moving. I dealt with all of the nervy moments I had in the match pretty well."

Can you win the French Open? "I have played well in Roland Garros at the past - two semi-finals and a couple of quarters. Last year my game was not ready to win the event whereas the previous time against Rafa there I played well. I have pushed Rafa a few times on the clay and this obviously gives my confidence. I don't think I would go into the French as one of the favourites but if I play like that I'll give myself an opportunity."

  7. Post update

The pleasantries are almost over. Now for the plaudits...

  8. Post update

Andy Murray: "Thank you to everybody who came today, it was an incredible atmosphere and it's always a pleasure to play in front of these people. To play Rafa in Spain is always extremely tough. But this is the reason why we play, for these matches. One of the toughest things to do is beat Rafa on clay, and I'm glad I was able to do it today."

  9. Post update

Murray collects a rather curious golden trophy that looks rather like something you would hang mugs on. Then he takes the microphone...

  10. Post update

Rafael Nadal: "Congratulations Andy. You played much better than me today so good luck for Roland Garros and the rest. Clearly it wasn't the match I hoped to have. It's not a nice way to end what has been a very positive and important week for me. I'm looking forward to Rome and French Open now."

  11. Post update

    Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal

Rafa looks slightly sheepish as he collects the runners-up trophy from Queen Sofia, whom he addresses as the "best queen in the world."

  12. Post update

    Andy Murray

After winning, Murray scrawled on the camera "marriage works". Can't argue with that.

And on close examination of the photo above - is that his wedding ring tied to his laces?

  13. Post update

We're just waiting for the presentation now. Apparently Murray is being given a crash course in how to shake hands with the Queen of Spain. Can't be any harder than dethroning the king of clay...

Matthew Vennard: Incredible stuff from Andy Murray - beating Rafael Nadal, on clay. In Madrid!

Ben Hibburd: Fantastic win for Andy Murray he destroyed Nadal. Great form going into the French Open.

  15. Post update

Murray's beaming smile tells you all you need to know. What has happened to him since he became a married man? That's two titles in a week and both on his least favourite surface. Surely he has a real chance at the French Open now.

  16. Post update

Murray runs straight to his box to celebrate with Amelie Mauresmo. It's his first victory over Nadal on clay, his first Masters series win on the surface and, frankly, it wasn't even close.

  17. Game, set and match Murray

    Murray 6-3 6-2 Nadal

    Andy Murray

Bullet serve. Edged to slip by Nadal. 15-0. But then a misjudgement as Murray watches a Rafa backhand dip at the last minute and find the corner. A scare at 15-30 as Murray goes long, but responds straight away to level at 30-30. two points away. An extra bounce of the ball perhaps? Second serve but Nadal can't control his return and that's match point. Rafa nets. Murray wins. I repeat. Murray wins.

  18. Post update

    *Murray 6-3 5-2 Nadal

There's still some fight in Nadal as he volleys a winner for a 30-0 lead on his serve. Muscles bulging as he mops his brow, the Spaniard holds his nerve to peg it back to 5-2. Now Murray will serve for the title.

  19. Post update

    Murray 6-3 5-1 Nadal*

    Andy Murray

There's a bead of sweat on Murray's nose as he starts the game with an unreturnable first serve. Rafa levels at 15-15 then is given a lifeline by Murray's first double fault of the match. Murray seems momentarily distracted as he asks the umpire to turn his scoreboard away from his eyeline. Usually that mean bad news, but not here as Murray calmly converts the next two points. It's 40-30 now and Murray pounds a forehand beyond Rafa's reach to move within a game of victory.

  20. Post update

    *Murray 6-3 4-1 Nadal

Stunned silence gives way to rapturous applause as Rafa finds a rare winner. An equally rare unforced error from Murray takes Nadal to 40-15. Nadal lands his first ace to secure his first game of the second set.

Aidan Williams: Murray on home stretch now. Double break up. Fantastic to see him playing so well on clay. Like Nadal did you can only applaud.

Ron Douglas: New coach having a positive influence on Andy?

Johnson Ogunniyi: Nadal the King of Clay is about to be dethroned by Murray, who has only won one clay title before. Murray for French Open?

  22. Post update

    Murray 6-3 4-0 Nadal*

Is there a Murray wobble coming? No sign yet. Rafa is doing all he can to induce one but Murray's defence is rock solid as the Scot draws another error at the end of a long rally. Chalk flies up as Murray lands a forehand winner for 40-15. Moments later it's 4-0 as Rafa blinks first in another rally. Murray is two games from the title.

  23. Post update

    *Murray 6-3 3-0 Nadal

    Andy Murray

Murray must put that miss behind him. He does as a winner down the line sets up another break point. And this time Murray makes no mistake as Rafa has no answer to a crunching backhand. Double break in the bag. I risk major mockers here but I think this is the best tennis I've ever seen from Murray.

  24. Post update

    Murray 6-3 2-0 40-40 Nadal*

Great contest now. Two long rallies - one won by Murray the other by Nadal. But from 15-all Nadal gets one horribly wrong and here's another half chance for Murray. Nadal levels up at 30-30 with the sweetest drop shot you could wish to see then goes 40-30 up when Murray can't control his return.

Deuce now and Murray hangs in there with near-faultless tennis. His power off both flanks today is phenomenal and Rafa can't keep up. Break point - a virtual match point perhaps - but oh no! Murray nets a simple volley! Could that point come back to haunt him?

  25. Post update

    Murray 6-3 2-0 Nadal*

A testing service game for Murray now? Forget about it. The Scot holds to love to consolidate the break.

  27. Post update

    *Murray 6-3 1-0 Nadal

    Andy Murray

Phenomenal rally to kick off set two as Murray refuses to give up on a lost cause but finally succumbs. There's no let-up from Murray though and that means no free points to Rafa. A forehand catches the net, which means break point to the Scot. Is this it? Not quite as Rafa somehow fashions a half-volleyed drop shot winner.

Break point number two. Murray's focussed face says it all. As does his clenched fist as Rafa nets a routine forehand.

What a chance for Murray now...

  28. 'Too close to call'

    Russell Fuller

    BBC tennis correspondent

"It was a breathtaking start from Murray and he showed real resilience to save the three break back points carved out by a rapidly improving Nadal.

"He also took the first set when they met in Rome twelve months ago: so is today the day he gets a first ever clay court win over Nadal? Too close to call."

Charley, Chiswick: Murray spent his formative years on clay. In the past patience has been his major weakness but there is a calm to him now that is bringing him solid results.

  30. Game and first set Murray

    Murray 6-3 Nadal*

    Rafa Nadal

30-15 to Murray, but Rafa ups the ante with a punishing forehand top-spinner down the line. Murray then opts not to volley and pays the price as Nadal earns a break point.

What a response from Murray. A barrage of forehands and when Rafa can't keep a backhand in the court the set is the bag. Simply brilliant from the British number one against the king of clay.

  31. Post update

    *Murray 5-3 Nadal

Rafa is in the groove now and Murray is going to have to work for this set. Crisp volleyed winners off both flanks from the Mallorcan leave Murray serving for it.

  32. Post update

    Murray 5-2 Nadal*

    Andy Murray

Rafa is on his toes now, visibly energised as he readies himself to return. Two vintage forehand winners later and he has two break points. Ooh, close but no cigar as a Rafa forehand just misses the baseline. Murray claws it back to deuce then outfoxes Rafa in a rally to move within a point of 5-2. The return is inches long and Murray holds.

Nicholas Wall: Superb start from Andy. Wouldn't surprise me to see him make final of the French this year. Always felt he's underrated on clay.

Paul Staveley: Murray could be 6-0, 5-0, 40-0 up, I still wouldn't be sure he'd won the match. Nadal's a fighter - will make him work damn hard.

  34. Post update

    *Murray 4-2 Nadal

    Rafael Nadal

Signs of improvement from Rafa as he makes mincemeat of a decent Murray return and almost bursts a hole in the court with a smashed winner. Murray can't get his next return in and Nadal takes the game.

Murray has never beaten Nadal on clay but he does lead him 2-1 in finals.

Richard, East Dulwich: Murray is ideally placed to mount a challenge at the French Open - with Djokovic the man standing in his way. Nadal's extra half yard of pace and ounce of power has gone.

  36. Post update

    Murray 4-1 Nadal*

    Andy Murray

Murray's depth and weight of shot is still hurting Nadal, and the Spaniard is riled to see a deep forehand not called out. No mistaking who the crowd are gunning for as a Rafa point sparks jubilation. Nadal saves one game point but can't reach a pounded crosscourt forehand from Murray, who restores his three-game lead.

  37. Post update

    *Murray 3-1 Nadal

Murray makes his first false move as a forehand catches the tape. Rafa follows up with two big serves and finally gets himself on the board.

Sanjay Bhandari: I like both Rafa and Murray but it's important Rafa wins so that the French Open can be like before... I don't like change.

Alice Stainer: If there's a time to beat Nadal on clay this is probably it. Murray's confidence at all-time high and Nadal's only now returning.

  39. Post update

    Murray 3-0 Nadal*

This is one-way traffic. Nadal simply can't cope with Murray's variety of lengths and spins and he loses the game to 15. We've had 16 points, and the Spaniard has won two of them.

  40. Post update

    *Murray 2-0 Nadal

Wow - Muray is all over Rafa early on here. He pounces on a second serve with the relish of a hawk swooping for a mouse in a field to go 0-30 ahead then seals three break points when Nadal pushes a backhand long. Rafa attacks the net to save the first to huge cheers but the Spaniard loses his way in the following rally and loops another backhand beyond the baseline to hand Murray an early break.

Default Girl: Rafa has to be the favourite today. Home crowd advantage, leads on the head to head and most importantly, Djokovic is not across the net.

Ross McD: You have to back Nadal on clay to come through here, but Murray will make him work very, very hard for it.

  42. Post update

    Murray 1-0 Nadal*

A couple of big kicking serves and a wasteful backhand from Nadal give Murray a swift 40-0 advantage and a perfect first game for the British number one is completed when Nadal crashes a backhand long.

  43. Post update

Here we go then. Murray to serve first in the Spanish capital.

  44. 'A big test'

    Murray on Nadal

Here's Andy Murray's thoughts on the challenge facing him in Madrid this evening: "I'm aware it's going to be incredibly difficult. Playing against Nadal on clay in Spain is a big test. The crowd is incredibly pumped when he gets on the court. I have to be there mentally and play a smart match.

"You obviously need to play aggressive tennis but it's important not to go for too much. It's important that you have good tactics, trust your shots and hopefully play well. If I want to win, I'm going to have to play extremely well."

  45. Post update

Service practice now. Mauresmo is there too, supporting her charge.

If injuries have made Nadal a lesser player, he has given little sign of it this week. The magician from Mallorca has been back to his imperious best on his favourite surface, failing to lose a set en route to the final of a tournament he has won five times.

But Murray is not playing badly himself. He has an 8-0 record on clay this year and ruthlessly dismantled last year's finalist Kei Nishikori in yesterday's semi-final.

  47. Post update

The players are out on court exchanging forehands in the late afternoon Madrid sunshine, with Nadal's uncle Toni looking on purposefully. A defeat would see Rafa slip outside the world's top five.

  48. Post update

    Russell Fuller

BBC tennis correspondent on Radio 5 live sports extra

"Murray should be full of confidence ahead of the final, as he is still unbeaten on clay this year. The extra week's preparation in Munich has done him the world of good, even if the wet weather there and the scheduling in Madrid have left him more than a little weary. But his opponent remains the master of the surface. Nadal has beaten Murray in all six of their meetings on clay, and there's a bounce in his step again: he's threatening to hit peak form just in time for Roland Garros."

  50. Post update

Well, if Murray is our metaphorical bus, he has one almighty obstacle blocking his road to the expectant passengers at the next stop.

Rafael Nadal - the nine-time French Open champion and undisputed king of clay - lines up on the other side of the net.

    Orders don't come much taller.

  51. Post update

On Monday in Munich, Andy Murray ended a 10-year wait for his first clay-court title.

Six days later in Madrid, the British number one stands on the threshold of a second.

You know what they say about London buses...
