So, Murray unexpectedly serving to stay in the first set after 28 minutes. The Scot shows the sure instincts of a bloodhound to sniff out a floaty Muller backhand and charges into the net to scythe away the volley. Murray holds to love to pile some psychological pressure on Muller.

Croatia's Ivo Karlovic hit a record 45 aces en route to beating third seed Tomas Berdych and reach the Gerry Weber Open semi-finals at Halle.

The world number 27 improved the record for a three-set ATP tour match by one ace, winning 7-5 6-7 (6-8) 6-3.

"Berdych returns quite well really," said the 36-year-old. "That's why lots of aces are so important.

"I didn't really know how many aces I'd done, but when I heard it was 45 I knew that's a record. Hitting aces helps a lot, you can avoid the volleys. I was surprised when I was told how many I hit."

George Sim: Emmmmmm excuse me Andy Murray but this is not how we wrote the script for this match, can you please sort it??..

Alistair Elias: With that big leftie serve, wonder why Gilles Müller hasn't been ranked higher during his career.

A superb cross-court backhand gives Murray a glimmer at 15-15, but a couple of clinical volleys from Muller, who is showing a scalpel-sharp touch at the net, help him to another comfortable hold. It's been a hugely impressive performance from the Luxembourger so far.

Muller's heavy forehand is proving a more of a match for Murray in the long baseline rallies than might have been expected, and a wild forehand from Murray brings up 30-30. A very sharp volley gives Murray no chance and suddenly Muller has a break point for 5-1. A good kicker on the second serve gets Murray out of trouble. A gossamer drop-shot from the Scot leaves Muller standing, and an ace keeps Murray in the first set.

  6. Tough return for Robsonpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 19 June 2015

Some news on the former British women's number one.

Laura Robson has drawn the top seed, and world number 41, Daria Gavrilova in the first round of the Eastbourne qualifying competition.

The former British number one has not played a competitive match since last year's Australian Open.

Now then, can the big server close out the set with three straightforward holds? Muller is not the sort of player you want to be behind against. The world number 48 shows a few signs of nerves with an immediate double fault. Twitchy. A streaky forehand into the tramlines then brings up 15-30. Murray fires a vicious, dipping return at Muller's toes and passes him easily to bring up two break points.

Muller saves the first with a nice serve-volley point, and another wide, swinging delivery from the Luxembourg leftie drags him back to deuce. Murray then misses fractionally with a passing shot, and Muller's first ace of the match seals a gutsy hold.

  8. Muller breakspublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 19 June 2015

Muller takes a few chances on the groundstrokes and it works for him - a very solid backhand volley concludes a well-constructed point to give him 0-30. But a good serve and a lovely pick-up forehand drag Murray back to parity.

Muller isn't going quietly in these long rallies though, and he works Murray around the court beautifully to bring up his first break point. And he takes it when Murray can't get a heavy backhand back over the net! What a start for Muller.

Muller's extremely potent serve is the main weapon in the Luxembourger's locker.

He hit an astonishing 37 aces in his first-round match against Youzhny, and then wanged down another 19 against Dimitrov.

Murray, by comparison, has hit just 16 in his two matches put together so far.

Our first look at the Murray drop shot, a weapon he used quite frequently against Verdasco, as he knifes a cheeky back-spinner just over the net. No chance for Muller. A poor volley from the Luxembourger puts Murray 15-30 up, but that's as much of a sniff as Murray gets - three big serves slam the door in his face.

Two can play at that game, says Murray. A lucky bounce of the whitewash gives him his first ace as Muller swishes at fresh air, and then there's a more convincing ace right down the T. Two games in, and we're yet to see a point against serve.

"Perhaps rather than trying to find a weakness in your opponent, you make sure you hold your own serve and put pressure on Murray. Take care of your own game and don't worry about things you can't control. But Murray goes into this match as a strong favourite."

A very solid start for Muller as he hits his straps with four first serves in a row. There's a brief flurry of excitement as he bounces a putaway miles into orbit, before he closes out a simple hold to love.

"Murray comes up against old friend and former stalwart of British doubles in particular, Jamie Delgado, this afternoon.

"Delgado has been coaching Muller since last year, when they initially teamed up as a doubles pairing.

"Now firmly in coaches' corner, the 38-year-old from Birmingham will plot the downfall of a man whose wedding he attended only two months ago, and with whom he regularly plays doubles - in snooker.", external

As we mentioned, Murray's opponent today is Luxembourgish (we've checked, that is the adjective) world number 48 Gilles Muller.

Muller is 32 but is enjoying something of a late career renaissance, having reached his career-high ranking of 34 in February and recorded best-ever performances at the Australian and French Opens.

He can certainly mix it on grass as well - he's already put out reigning champion Grigor Dimitrov and former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Mikhail Youzhny at Queens.

And yes, he is the current Luxembourg Sports Personality of the Year.

It's been pretty smooth sailing for Murray so far, even if the British number one still hasn't quite found his best touch on the grass.

A comfortable straight-sets victory over qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu in round one was followed by a dogged 7-5 6-4 win over Fernando Verdasco yesterday - you can watch the best bits of that match here.

Murray is the only player yet to drop a set at Queen's this year, and he's now lost just one out of 18 matches since getting married in April. Wedded bliss indeed...

For years, he has carried the hopes of a nation on his shoulders, a lone crusader, a one-man Davis Cup band who has brought his country its greatest ever successes on a tennis court.

He has overcome tough battles with injury, and now, as he enters the latter stage of his career, he gears up for Wimbledon 2015 in superb form, playing what some have even suggested might be his best ever tennis.

But that's enough about Luxembourg's Gilles Muller. We're more interested in his opponent today: a certain Andy Murray.
