Along with Murray, there was plenty more British interest at Flushing Meadows today. Here's how they fared...

WINNER! Jo Konta stunned ninth seed and Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza to win  7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 after three hours and 23 minutes.

LOSER (boooo): Aljaz Bedene won the opening set against American Donald Young, eventually succumbing 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-2.

WINNER! Laura Robson and Colin Fleming, along with their respective partners, advanced in the women's and men's doubles.

Right at the start of the evening you may recall I told you that Andy Murray had only ever lost one second round match at a Grand Slam. Well, France's Adrian Mannarino came close to following in the foosteps of compatriot Arnaud Clement who beat a teenage Murray in round two at Flushing Meadows in 2005.

But the Briton survived the scare, extending his record at this stage of a Slam to 35 wins.

Andy Murray has been collared by another interviewer on his way back to the locker room and sounds rather weary as he dissects his win.

"I know he was hitting the ball well pushing me off the baseline," he tells Sky Sports. "I returned well but on break points he came up with big serves. I managed to fight through, it was very physical with a lot of running but I managed to get through."

Andy Murray catches his breath for the obligatory post-match interview on court.

"It was an extremely tough match," he, somewhat unsurprisingly, tells us.

"He hits ball very flat, has fantastic timing, and it is difficult to read where he is going to hit the ball. Thankfully in the third set I managed to grab the break point after missing chances in the first two sets. Like I said - it was very tough."

And with that the interviewer, rather generously, tells Murray to waste any more energy talking and get back to the locker room for an ice bath.

These two poor blokes look absolutely shattered. Andy Murray finds a final burst of energy to raise his arms into the balmy New York air and throw his wristbands into the Arthur Ashe crowd. Adrian Mannarino manages a tired wave before trudging slowly off court and into the locker room. Someone give him a piggyback.

Phew! Finally, finally, Andy Murray sees off his plucky French opponent, crashing down an ace to win after a three-hour marathon match. Next up? Brazil's 30th-seed Thomaz Bellucci.

Almost there. Adrian Mannarino has put in a remarkable effort against a man few expected him to beat, but Andy Murray's superiority has finally told. The Briton keeps Mannarino pinned back on the baseline and another tired backhand fails to beat the net as Murray clinches another break. Now he serves for the match...

Murray is galloping through these games as the finishing line moves ever closer. The Briton gifts a couple of points to the Frenchman, who can barely raise the energy to take further advantage. He weakly slaps a backhand into the tape at 40-30 as Murray edges closer towards victory.

Hang on - Mannarino is not throwing in the towel just yet. The Frenchman staggers into life, attacking the Briton's backhand, before finishing him off with a crunching forehand winner.

Another Murray service game - another Murray hold to love. Mannarino has no answer to the third seed now. Or more accurately he has no energy to offer answers to the third seed. Murray's box jump to their feet as he moves 3-0 ahead and within sight of the third round.

The end is nigh for Adrian Mannarino, I would respectfully suggest. Andy Murray flexes his muscles, suffocating the Frenchman in a vice-like grip. Mannarino is struggling to string two points together as he meekly surrenders his opening serve of the decider.

Feeling jittery at home? Imagine being Andy Murray. The Briton looks rather calm, as you would expect from a two-time Grand Slam winner, but his first action of the fifth set indicate otherwise. A double fault.

But that stirs Murray into action, rattling off four sharp points to easily hold.

    Murray 5-7 4-6 6-1 6-3 Mannarino

Conserving energy? Pah. Andy Murray has no intention of doing that. The third seed does not allow a tiring Adrian Mannarino to cling on any longer, forcing the Frenchman into a trio of errors as Murray races 40-0 ahead. After a minor blip of a rogue forehand from Murray, Mannarino tosses the fourth set to his opponent with another double fault at the crucial time.

To my untrained eye, it appears that Adrian Mannarino is perhaps trying to save a bit of energy for the deciding fifth set. Murray rattles through another hold-to-love service game - now he is one game away from levelling this match.
