I'm afraid it has been a night when, to paraphrase the Spice Girls, two became none. We started with two Britons left in the US Open and have ended with neither third seed Andy Murray nor qualifier Jo Konta able to reach the quarter-finals.

So it's goodbye from him and goodbye from her.

"It's not easy playing Andy, he's such a fighter. I knew I had to stick with it. I served very well, that helped me in the fourth set. I wish I could play every tie-break like that.

It's all over for Johanna Konta, a remarkable story comes to an end. She matched Petra Kvitova for long periods, but, in the end, the class of the two-time Wimbledon champion shone through. Still, tonight's showing suggests there is much more to come from Konta.

    **Four hour klaxon**

The match passes through the four-hour mark. That makes me feel tired even reading it. A weak backhand into the net gives Murray a 30-0 advantage, then he blasts an ace down the middle to move within a point of the game. Then Anderson has a nasty feeling of déjà vu as the Briton does exactly the same in the next point.
