That was a very poor game on his serve from Berdych. Federer made him play but he was his own worst enemy.

Berdych in trouble, staring at a 0-30 deficit, and the nervous whispers of the sell-out crowd can't be helping the Czech. The sixth seed is wobbling, swinging wildly at a forehand, presenting Federer with three break points and the Czech then falters at the net. Federer to serve for the set.

Matt McGladrigan: I genuinely think every match I've seen Berdych play this year, he's moaned about the tennis balls to the umpire.

Beautiful! Federer threads a forehand winner down the line which kisses the paint. A marvelous  way to open the game. The Swiss races to a 40-0 lead but his charged is halted with a serve-volley which doesn't quite go to plan.

One point nicked, but can Berdych steal any more? No, no, no. Federer shuffles at the back of the court, swings loose and free to produce an irretrievable forehand winner.

This match has yet to fully burst into life. Sloppy errors from both players giving it a staccato feel. One of the match's lengthier rallies ends with a malfunctioning Federer backhand - 30-15 in Berdych's favour - and the 30-year-old goes on to hold with little fuss.

Federer has had three doubles faults already - sometimes it takes him three matches to hit that number.

Berdych unable to make the most of the opportunity presented to him, allowing Federer to match on from deuce untroubled.

Wilson Pickett's Land of a 1000 Dances rings around the stadium as Berdych sinks his fingers into an ice packet. Whatever is troubling the sixth seed it doesn't delay him long as the pair are soon in position again, eyeing each other from each end.

At 30-30, Berdych fails to do damage on Federer's second serve, scooping his return into the tramlines. The Swiss, though, not in total control and a double fault allows Berdych back in the game at 40-40.

Berdych pinning Federer to the baseline with a series of brutal blows and, eventually, the Swiss crumbles. Berdych a point away from holding. He's had to dig deep and we're only five games in.

Fine returning from Federer, forcing a statuesque Berdych to net. From deuce to advantage, though, plenty of juice on that 145mph Berdych serve, and he wraps up the game with a booming ace down the 'T'. That was the confidence-boosting hold the Czech needed.

Federer is the player coming out on top of the lengthier rallies, Berdych faltering at 0-15 by slapping a simple forehand into the barrier. The Czech in trouble at 0-30 down, but dances into the middle of the court and dazzles with an inside-out forehand into the corner.

But the Czech is perhaps trying a touch too hard. He steps in, balloons a forehand long when he had the freedom of the court. Two break points Federer.

The serve comes to Berdych's rescue. One break point saved. An iffy Federer return allows Berdych to serve and volley out of trouble. To deuce we go.

Berdych's outfit, as is almost always the case, is a peculiar one. He's stepped out, in public, wearing light brown shorts, which have a darker, muddy brown, strip down the side, although it's not as bad as Coventry's away strip of the 70s. While I've been concentrating on Berdych's attire, Federer is fully focused on the match, holding to love with ease.

    Federer breaks back

Berdych is dragged to the tape, the beanpole Czech with a touch too much adrenaline on a volley which bounces beyond the baseline and the crowd cheer as they see their man go 0-30 ahead.

Federer upping the ante from the baseline, hitting at his opponent with venom and Berdych, footwork all wrong, plonks a forehand into the net.

The Swiss, the six-time champ, has three break points... the crowd are rooting for him to take his chance, and he does with a feather-soft drop shot, Berdych attempts to chase it but he slips on the baseline. Game over.

If Berdych is going to have any success, he's going to have to be very accurate with his first serve. He's also going to have to try and control Federer's forehand. But it's been a very tentative start from Federer.

Federer, dressed in navy and black with light grey trainers accentuating the look, coughs up two successive double faults and slips to 0-40. Federer not so much slow out of the blocks but yet to arrive at the blocks.

Berdych with three break points. Federer with a backhand into the tape. A surprising start.

Plenty of slice and dice on Berdych's opening serve, which gets the better of Federer. 15-0. Simple. No dramas to talk about yet as the Czech effortlessly holds serve, another boomer out wide takes him to 40-15, and he follows up with a crunching first serve which Federer pushes into the tramlines.

Tomas Berdych's career stats do not compare with Roger Federer's, but no-one's does. The Czech, though, has played well since the US Open in September, enjoying a 12-4 win-loss record and securing titles in Shenzhen and Stockholm.

The 30-year-old's sixth appearance in this tournament is also a significant one as Ivan Lendl is only other Czech player to qualify six or more times, with Andy Murray's old coach making 12 appearances.

Roger Federer is peerless on hard courts, he's also peerless under canvas. The Swiss has only lost 64 of his 325 matches indoors - which is the best career match-winning percentage indoors among active players. But let's stop with these sort of stats otherwise Tomas Berdych, if he's reading, which he isn't, definitely isn't, might pack his bags and walk out.

No-one has played in more ATP World Tour Finals, won more titles, won more matches or more prize money at the season-ending finale than Roger Federer. Take a bow, Roger.

The Swiss is playing in a record 14th consecutive year at these year-end championships, has won the title six times, experienced victory on 48 occasions and cashed in $13,171,000 in the process.

And even though he's getting on a bit - at 34  the world number three is oldest player to qualify since Andre Agassi (35) in 2005 - he's still the favourite to beat Berdych.

As is the case with almost every player he comes up against, Roger Federer has won more than he has lost against Tomas Berdych.

The Swiss leads the head-to-head 14-6 and has beaten the Czech in three of their four most recent encounters.

But on the hard courts their contests have been close, with Federer winning seven and Berdych five. In fact, in their most recent hard court tussles, the record is an evenly-balanced four wins each.
