"A shame for Heather, She's didn't get the first serves she needed, and Babos has the firepower to pounce on any shorter second serves. Heather has to regroup quickly here."

But Timea Babos is not to be disappointed at the second attempt! The powerful Hungarian has Heather Watson dancing around the baseline, the Briton only able to scoop one return high - and Babos hammers down an overhead volley to break back.

Nervy times for Heather Watson as she closes in on round two. Timea Babos has the chance to break back, only for Watson to see off the danger as the Hungarian slaps a backhand out of the court....

"Babos is looking tired after a brutal 40-shot rally in that game. Watson should be feeling great. She's played such a gutsy game to break Babos there."

Let's see what Timea Babos is made of then. The pressure is back on the Hungarian, who miscues a backhand to let Watson go 15-0 ahead.

Oh my word...the pair then serve up a sumptuous 40-shot rally - and Watson wins the endurance test to lead 30-0.

Babos bends over, hands on her knees, looking at the floor, trying to catch her breath.

She's spent. She claws back one point but her legs have gone, like a heavyweight boxer who has just been clobbered by a right hook. Her mind is affected too, serving up a double fault to hand Watson a crucial break.

    Watson 7-6 (7-4) 4-4 Babos*

Phew! From 15-30 down, Heather Watson rediscovers her service game to wriggle out of a tight spot.

Watto clenches her fist and screams in delight as she spanks a double-handed backhand down the line for 30-30. And that tees her up nicely to bang down an ace and another whopper that Babos cannot return.

Timea Babos looks as hard as nails. The sulky Hungarian stares back across the net like Ivan Drago used to eyeball Rocky Balboa when things don't go her way.

Heather Watson battles to 40-30 on Babos's serve, but the British number two cannot force deuce as Babos tightens her grip on the game.

    Watson 7-6 (7-4) 3-3 Babos*

Strong service game from Watson as she edges back ahead. A wonderful drop-shot from the British number two (an effort perhaps influenced by the drop-shot-loving Judy Murray) has Babos scampering to no avail, with the Hungarian going long as Watson asks serious questions of her defence.

Normal service continues as Heather Watson and her Hungarian opponent Timea Babos trade holds. Both players have whipped off their sun-blocking visors as daylight begins to fade in Melbourne.

Roger Federer probably won't even need a post-match shower - he barely broke sweat.

The Swiss maestro pulls off his headband as he goes to the net to shake the hand of Georgian opponent Nikoloz Basilashvili, who looks like he doesn't know what has just hit him.

I'll tell him - the Fed Express. The third seed needs just over an hour to chug into round two.

Timea Babos appears to be suffering a bit of a first-set hangover. But paracetamol won't cure this one. She needs to does up on a big mixture and composure and confidence.

The Hungarian snaffles a high ball to smash her way into a 40-30 lead, teeing up a huge forehand in the next point to wade out of a potentialy sticky situation.

    Watson 7-6 1-1 Babos*

Routine stuff from Timea Babos, who holds in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it service game.

But Heather Watson matches that effort with another hold-to-love, ending when the Hungarian overcooks a forehand.

Heather Watson has got it! The British number two has Timea Babos rocking again and when the Hungarian is stretching for a forehand in the corner, she can only steer the return into the tramlines.

Wonderful first set for Watson, who takes the early advantage after 70 minutes of mesmerising tennis.

The finishing line is in sight for Heather Watson. Timea Babos can't cope with the Briton's intense returning and it is a set point for Watson...

    Watson 6-6 Babos (5-4)

Wow. Stunning stuff from both players as they slug it out for this opening set. A wonderful backhand from Watson - described as "world-class" by our commentator David Law - cannot be returned by Babos.

Watson has the bit between her teeth now, forcing Babos into a long backhand to hold her serve.
