Ben Silveston: Grand Slams happen every year, why can't the Davis Cup? Seems a strange decision in some ways.

Eileen: It would probably allow for more commitment from the top players if it was every 2 years.

Liz Henwood: I adore the Davis Cup - totally different mad atmosphere & set up to 'normal' tennis tournaments - so much fun! Love it!

  16. Murray 7-5 6-5 Nishikori*published at 15:14

Murray looking stronger, mainly because his first serve is more reliable and more of a weapon. Nishikori waits in front of us, puffing out his cheeks in anticipation of another examination. Even when the Japanese gets into the rally, Murray somehow gets to a backhand when he has no right, forcing Nishikori to go wide. Hold to 15, Nishikori back under the pump.

You just feel that Murray has a sniff every time he gets a look at the Nishikori second serve. So it proves for 15-15, but that is followed by a wide forehand and some Murray chuntering for 30-15. Back-and-forth, near-silence when Nishikori finally puts away an overhead for the game.

You could close your eyes and know what is happening in this match from the noise of the crowd. Polite applause - Nishikori's point. Roar - Murray's point. Roof comes off - Murray wins a big point. From 15-30, Murray hammers a skin-saving ace, then finds the most delicate drop shot for game point. Big hold completed, Nishikori will have to serve to stay in the second set.
