With Djokovic racing off into the Parisian night, presumably to nip into a swish restaurant before the kitchen closes, he might not even have had time to think about his opponent. Well, Novak it will be 14th-seed Roberto Bautista Agut. One to think about over hors d'oeuvres.

Djokovic turns Joker-vic as he applauds Chatrier for all their eye-straining in the past half-hour. The Serb beats his chest and uses his hands to encourage each side of the French crowd to celebrate his win.

Rousing reception for Aljaz Bedene as he leaves Chatrier in near darkness. His first foray into a Slam third round might be over, but he has been far from embarrassed against the world number one. Plenty of encouragement to take from that one, I reckon.

    Djokovic 6-2 6-3 6-3 Bedene

Oh no! Aljaz, Aljaz, Aljaz...the Briton gifts a match point to Djokovic, somehow missing the target with a loose forehand. He points his racquet at the mark in the red clay, trying to kid the umpire - and himself - into thinking the ball dusted the whitewash. It didn't.

Novak clasps his palms together, jokingly begging the umpire to stay in his seat. That he does and a long forehand from Bedene brings the evening to a close.

No signs yet of the umpire calling this a day. The Roland Garros officials will be keen to avoid further disruption to their schedule by this match being carried over. A wallop of a forehand is the only bright spot (pun intended) for Bedene at 40-15, a pumped up Djokovic bludgeoning the ball back down to clinch it. Then he smacks down the service balls back to Bedene, basically telling him to get a shift on.

Woah, hang on Aljaz! Slow down man. The Briton races through his service game, smashing down an ace for 40-15 and then sealing it when Djokovic can't guide a backhand to safety.

Novak Djokovic races out of his chair after about 30 seconds of the changeover. He's got a job to do. The top seed is ranting and raving between points, shouting at the sky for daring to become dark. Tsk, science eh?

Bad light is becoming Bedene's friend though. The Briton takes the game into deuce, much to Novak's annoyance, eventually buckling to a sledgehammer of a Serbian forehand.

"Aljaz Bedene has approached this match and this set in the right way. He's played well but it's one thing breaking Djokovic's serve, you've got to follow it up by holding your own."

Ah. Beware the wounded world number one. Djokovic roars back, nicking Bedene's break back...er...back in an instant.

He's got it! Bedene is determined to roll up at Roland Garros again tomorrow. Another chance for the Briton as Novak slaps a forehand into the net. Djoko, becoming increasingly frustrated, is drawn into a baseline slugfest, eventually losing patience with a heavy-handed forehand that whizzes past the left tramline.

But Djokovic won't get the job done tonight if he loses this third set. Bedene has produced a showreel of quality shots tonight, another sumptuous lob helping tee up another break point. This is his sixth chance of the night, having only converted one, but misses the line to go back to deuce...

Stunning stuff! Aljaz Bedene rummages around in the top drawer to pull a shot that holds his serve. The British number two has a moment of panic at deuce, but digs out an ace and a then a produces a wonderful backhand that arcs around Djokovic's reach. On we go...

The light is fading fast at Roland Garros. Aljaz Bedene makes that point to the umpire. Maybe he will be fiddling around in his pocket for a lightmeter in the next few minutes...

Ooooh, chance here for Bedene. The adopted Briton has a break point, but he can't convert as Djokovic has him shuttling across the baseline. Finally he gives up as the Serb smacks a backhand beyond his reach. He's not going quietly though, sticking with Novak in a couple of tough rallies before the top seed sees the hold through. And a long, loud roar tells you exactly how much that means...

    Djokovic 6-2 6-3 1-0 Bedene

Aljaz Bedene is enjoying himself out there. He drags Djokovic back to 30-30, then the keen football fan shows some neat footwork before the next point - with a flick and a few keepy-uppies - to the amusement of the Chatrier crowd. Then it is back to serious business as he staves off a game point to force deuce....

First break point for Djokovic at the first opportunity. The Serb jumps into a forehand which he crunches down the line to set up the steal, then forces Bedene into a backhand error to nab it. Novak wants to wrap this one up sharpish.

Right...Bedene's makeshift optician (his trainer) pops a few eye-drops into his lense and he's back in business. Time to focus on the match again...
