Nishikori adopts the ol' serve and volley early doors to take it to 30-0.

Strange. That looked like a long return from Wawrinka. No call. Nishikori loses the point after a lazy looking drop-shot is picked up by Stan. It's 40-30.

But another utilisation of the classic serve and volley sees the Florida resident hold.

Wawrinka has one of the best single-handed backhands we've seen but that doesn't mean you can hit to his forehand without strength.

    Wawrinka 1-0 Nishikori*

An early challenge by Nishikori. Keen. And the Japanese player forces a replay of the point - his return was in by fractions.

That must have rattled Wawrinka a little. He smacks a forehand into the net and it's 15-40.

Two break points for the world number five. Actually, make that none after two rather wayward forehand returns.

A decent serve at advantage sees the Swiss 31-year-old hold.

    Wawrinka v Nishikori

So anyway, the last time these two met was at this year's US Open - the semi-finals in fact which the Swiss won 4-6 7-5 6-4 6-2, external - he went on to win the tournament, of course.

They've met six times and Wawrinka leads 4-2.

The scene is set, the stage is ...er... blue.

This match should provide one of the highlights of the group stage, matching two of the most popular players and best shot-makers in the game.

It will also be a test of the Federer-Nadal effect - whether, in the absence of two global sporting superstars, two of the current leading ATP names can attract 17,000 spectators to east London on a Monday afternoon.

Wawrinka wins the toss and opts to serve.

A quick smile for the cameras and then the players take to their ends for the warm-up.

Stan has the weight of shot but Kei has the speed. Once Wawrinka finds the range and settles down then he should be OK. He has the game to knock Nishikori out of his stride.

Stan Wawrinka, carrying a massive bag over his right shoulder, strides in next, full of purpose.

The players are on their way, the lights are down, and the atmosphere is building nicely.

    Should be a cracker.

Welcome to day two of the ATP World Tour Finals. Today it's world number three Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland up against world number five Kei Nishikori of Japan.

The match, the first in Group A, or Group John McEnroe as it is officially known, gets under way shortly and should be a good warm-up act for tonight's main feast of Andy Murray v Marin Cilic.
