Kerber has got herself in a terrible stew here. She's not getting as many revs on the ball as her arm is so tight. Tsurenko perked up and kept her level high.

    *Kerber 6-2 5-6 Tsurenko

Angelique Kerber looks up to the roof as she takes a swig of her cool water at the changeover. She's not sure how she isn't over the line yet. Lesia Tsurenko wraps up the hold - after the help of technoclogy - with a sweeping forehand winner that dusts the line.

Well, well, well. The pendulum swings from a match point to a break point.... And Lesia Tsurenko snaffles it when Angelique Kerber slaps a forehand return into the net. Nerves have got to the top seed.

    *Kerber 6-2 5-4 Tsurenko

Is Angelique Kerber going to wrap this up? She crouches down at the baseline to dig out a double-handed forehand that flies well wide for 30-30. A long baseline rally ensues before Tsurenko scoops a return over the whitewash for 40-30. But wait! The Ukrainian isn't going away quietly, forcing deuce before Kerber earns a match point. But it is saved!

    Kerber 6-2 5-4 Tsurenko*

Neat and tidy from Lesia Tsurenko, but one suspects the curtain is going to be drawn on this match quick sharp. She forces Kerber into a couple of errors before clinching the game with a beauty of a backhand. But the German top seed is now serving for the match...

One break of serve away from the second round. A pair of aces helps top seed Kerber on her way, then a trademark thumping forehand down the line sees the leftie home.

    Kerber 6-2 4-3 Tsurenko*

Lesia Tsurenko is no mug. As her record in the Grand Slams - a place in the 2016 US Open last 16 and several victories here in Melbourne and at Wimbledon - indicates.

She is swimming against the tide here, but keeps in touch with another hold. A thumping return leaves Kerber unable to slap a backhand back to safety.

Angelique Kerber's start to her defence is going about as smoothly as she dreamt it on Sunday night. Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko is struggling to cope with the world number one's power and precision. She is looking likely to be back in the locker room within 20 minutes or so.

Nick Kyrgios is in a hurry. The Australian 14th seed is hurtling towards round two at Melbourne Park for the fourth straight year. He is two sets and a break up against unseeded Portuguese player Gastao Elias.

    *Kerber 6-2 3-2 Tsurenko

Tsurenko hits a strong serve and follows it up with a backhnd cross court to go 40-15 up. But a weak attempted lob allows Kerber to smash at the net and a forehand behind Tsurenko gets the score back to deuce.

Kerber has Tsurenko scurrying around the court but she finds a backhand winner down the line. Kerber responds with a forehand winner.

Another game point is wasted by Tsurenko but she makes no mistake at the third time of asking, firing another backhand down the line.

Tsurenko surprises Kerber with a forehand down the line on the opening point of the game but she goes long with a backhand and Kerber rattles off another game with relative ease.

    Wawrinka 4-6 1-0 Klizan*

How big could this be in the context of this match? We'll find out later. Stan Wawrinka hauls himself out of bother with a couple of big first serves when it really matters, batting off a break point and managing to hold his opening service game of the second set.

    *Kerber 6-2 2-1 Tsurenko

Tsurenko challenges three times on the opening point of the second set, twice in her favour, but none of them win her a point. An unforced backhand error hands Kerber a break point she takes.

Another simple hold puts the German in control of the second set but Tsurenko refuses to buckle, hitting a lovely backhand to wrong-foot Kerber as the Ukrainian gets on the scoreboard.

Dan Evans has been on a huge high after the best week of his career. He has got himself reset. This is more impressive than the week in Sydney for me. He is showing real class. And he has a lot of years left on tour where he can do some fantastic things.

When Dan Evans applies himself he is some player. He is unpredictable and keeps a lot of guys off balance. He's different and it is a great tool to have. He has a lot of substance and it is the product of a lot of hard work.

    Evans 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 5-1 Bagnis

If this was a wrestling match, then Facundo Bagnis would be getting tapped out. But it isn't so Dan Evans must go for the knockout.

The British number three pumps his fist as the Argentine sends a forehand way too long on break point.
