Rafael Nadal has turned the tables faster than me on the wrong side of a lazy susan loaded with crispy duck.

    That's fast.

A freebie double fault is all that Dusan Lajovic is taking from the game and now the Serb has to serve to stay in the set rather than take it.

  4. Rain ends play on outside courtspublished at 20:40 British Summer Time 29 August 2017

Well, rain ends most of today's play. All of the scheduled matches on the outside courts at Flushing Meadows have been cancelled, except for French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko's battle against Spain's Lara Arruabarrena.

With the young Latvian leading 6-2 1-6 3-1, they will hang tight and possibly move under Ashe's roof.

Everyone else, including British number three Aljaz Bedene, must come back on day three.

We've seen it so many times. The pressure, the feeling, you're playing against Rafa - it just happens. You can't contain it. It affects the mind and you get broken to love.

    Where did that come from?

Suddenly, just when he needed it most, Rafael Nadal's game clicks into gear.

A defensive masterclass as he fetches from the far reaches, keeps the ball in play and draws mistakes from Lajovic to break to love.

Time to find an indoor court to have a practice, according to this tweet from world number 116 Dustin Brown.

The dreadlocked German, who knows a thing or two about causing a scene against Rafa by the way (remember Wimbledon 2015?), was supposed to be playing Brazil's Thomasz Bellusci on Court Eight.

Rafael Nadal is clinging on rather than cruising through at the moment.

Dusan Lajovic has a sit-down and a sip of isotonic to mull over his situation as he prepares to serve for the opening set.

    How are those nerves?

Well, Marc, we might get a classic semi-final here - unfortunately Federer and Nadal are in the same half of the draw.

Dusan Lajovic unfurls that picture-postcard backhand once more, stroking a winner down the line for 30-30.

It is not quite the full Richard Gasquet-stunner, but it is a good looking shot.

Rafael Nadal's double-handed punch is supposed to be function over fashion, but it is not proving that way so far.

He drifts one long off that wing to slip to deuce...

The retro, Pharrell-designed fashion that Naomi Osaka was wearing and Alexander Zverev had on last night is the talk of the locker room, according to Andrea Hlavackova. She's also on the books of that clothing supplier and was taken aback when we told her the dresses were going for $140 here. She says the players would get between seven and 10 of those dresses each from the sponsor. She has an arrangement with her coach to give her previous line of outfits to young players in the Czech Republic to help them out.

Rafael Nadal is not doing anything spectacular, but the grind is as important as the glitter at this level.

He whips away a wrong-footing forehand to take the game to 15.

By the way, my annual reminder of the defining difference between Wimbledon and the US Open.

The stateside ball boys don't stand parade-ground straight, click their heels together and await the players' nod.

Instead, they wander around the back of the court, slinging big over-arm lob to their colleagues at various other points around the perimeter.

Dusan Lajovic is lighting up the court. He is enjoying the occasion and has risen to the occasion. He's playing fantastic tennis - although I'm not sure it is sustainable.

But it shows the depth of the men's game. For the world number 85 to push the number one ranking is outstanding.

Changes have been made to the roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium this year to make it quieter on court when it is covered...

On one of the matches in the stadium last year - it might have been Kyle Edmund's match against Djokovic - it was noticeably very, very loud under the roof, just a constant noise. It affects the players, because they want to hear the sound of their opponent hitting the ball. It is an astonishing structure though.

The best rally of the match so far at 15-15.

Both men flinging the kitchen sink, hob and all the white goods into their groundstrokes.

Lajovic leaps into a one-handed backhand before finally picking apart his man down the line.

    Cracking stuff.

Are you not entertained? I'm not sure that Team Rafa are actually.

Their man remains a break adrift. Lajovic is two service holds from the opening set.
