That concludes the Grand Slam year then.

The final roll of honour, which I would characterise as retro-quirk, reads thus:

Australian Open: Federer & S Williams

    French Open: Nadal & Ostapenko

    Wimbledon: Federer & Muguruza

    US Open: Nadal & Stephens

    What will 2018 bring?

    See you there....

    Nadal 6-3 6-3 6-4 Anderson

Rafael Nadal's coach: "I am very happy the way he has been playing and competing. He started with a few issues but after the first few games he started playing better.

"I have always believed in Rafa very much and always knew that he was capable of that.

"He is very consistent mentally and physically this season and that is very important. Many players have had injuries."

On if Nadal will overtake Federer and his 19 Grand Slams...

I think he will but it will happen after Roger retires. I think Roger is trying to get one more and stop Rafa winning more.

Then he’s hoping Nadal can accumulate two more over the next three years but I have a feeling Nadal will be around for a little more than that.

Rafael Nadal is handed his $3.7m winner's cheque in a rather underwhelming plain small envelope.

If any ceremony could justify one of those novelty giant cheque then it was this one - the richest in tennis history along with last night's women's final.

Rafael Nadal does his old bite-the-handle cradle-the-body schtick as he poses for the snappers.

  9. Will Rafa catch Roger?published at 00:14 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

Rafael Nadal: I can't thank Toni enough for everything he has done for me. Without him I don't think I would be playing tennis. He has had great commitment to training with me since I was three and he is one of the most important people in my life.

Rafael Nadal: It is a very special two weeks for me, but first I want to say congratulations to Kevin who has come back better than ever after some tough injuries. You are a great example to all the players on tour.

To close the Grand Slam year with a win in New York, brings me to a higher energy because the crowd is unbelievable here.

James Stevenson: Big Kev gave it his best and credit to him. But Nadal was just too good.

I want to say thank you for the support from back home in South Africa, to my wife and my brother, but also my parent back home. You built me a wall in my back yard and taught me to fight for everything.

On Nadal's difficult period in his career...

I did think Rafa should retire. After two or three years of playing average tennis, I thought I don’t want to see Nadal like this.

I saw him in the first week of the year and he was hitting the ball much harder than previous years and I thought... he's back.

On this year's Grand Slam champions...

Can you believe it, you’d never imagine it. Venus Williams has made it to a couple of Grand Slam finals. It’s been a bizarre year, an extraordinary year. No doubt about that.

Rafael Nadal has skipped back behind the scenes. I wonder why.

A call of nature perhaps while they close the Arthur Ashe roof for the presentation ceremony?

Or maybe, ala Andy Murray in 2012, he has forgotten the all-important bit of sponsor kit for the trophy shots?

His face folds into that familiar grin as he exchanges looks with his entourage before heading to the net for a sweaty embrace with Kevin Anderson.

There will be pleasantries on the microphone, but they won't mask the gulf in class on court that we have seen.

A couple of frat-boy shouters in the bleachers are the first challenge for Rafael Nadal in the game, making the Spaniard abort his serve action midway a couple of times.

Then Kevin Anderson pirouttes into a backhand smash to bring up 30-30.

A little tension in the Spaniard's nerves and we are to deuce.
