Evert also lost her first three Grand Slam finals before making the breakthrough at Roland Garros in 1974.

Not bad company to be in.

Simona Halep is still taking in her victory.

She is signing the last few autographs and posing for those final few selfies.

She won't be thinking about it now I'm sure but Simona Halep will get a lovely financial boost for this win.

It's a fair bit more than 50 years ago when prize money was first given out at the French Open...

Now Simona Halep has that Grand Slam winning monkey off her back I definitely wouldn't bet against her winning a few more titles.

So after three consecutive defeats in finals, Simona Halep is just the second Romanian woman to win a Grand Slam, following Virginia Ruzici in 1978.

She is the 49th woman to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era.

Simona Halep: "Last year was very emotional so I was living for this moment since I was 14 so thank you and I wanted this moment to happen here in France. Congrats to Sloane, you have done a great job since the injuries and I'm sure you are going to play lots more finals.

"I see the Romanian flag in the crowd, thanks to my friends and my family and to all the Romanian and French fans, I have felt your support over the last two weeks. I wish in the future to play more finals here, because it's a really beautiful tournament and it is my favourite one."

Runner-up Sloane Stephens: "To Simona congrats on your first slam, no-one else I'd rather lose to than the number one in the world.

"To my team, thank you for your support and without you I wouldn't be able to have such a smile on my face with a loss.

"I look forward to seeing you next year."

Now it is time for the speeches from Halep and Stephens.

First up is the runner-up.

"It's not the trophy I wanted but it is still beautiful," she says.

Now Simona Halep gets her hands on the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen.

She raises it high above her head and the crowd cheer again.

You can't help but feel happy for her. There may now be a tear or two in her eye as the Romanian national anthem plays.

Sloane Stephens still has a brilliant smile on her face as she receives her runners-up trophy.

She more than played her part in one of the matches of the season today.

Simona Halep on ITV: "It was amazing and thank you for your support. In the last game I didn't feel like I could breathe any more and didn't want to repeat last year, so I cannot believe it. I was dreaming of this moment since I started playing tennis and I'm happy it happened at Roland Garros."

Halep says she thought "everything was gone" at a set and a break down.

She kept fighting, and waited for her opening and sometimes that's what you need to do as a tennis player. She is the best player in the world and deserves her victory here.

Halep is helped back down from the stands and the crowd roar for their new champion. She turns and waves with a beaming smile.

She was in tears after losing in the final last year. The Romanian's face couldn't look any more different this time around.

Sloane Stephens - who was utterly brilliant for the first set of this match - comes around the net to congratulate Simona Halep.

Now the Romanian heads into the crowd to hug every member of her support team.

Halep drops her racquet in disbelief. She turns and beams at her box. What a moment. What a noise from the crowd.
