Great Britain have missed out on the Billie Jean King Cup Finals after Harriet Dart's loss to France's world number five Caroline Garcia sealed defeat in their best-of-five qualifier.

Dart, Britain's highest-ranked player in the absence of Emma Raducanu, was beaten 6-1 6-7 (10-12) 6-1 by Garcia.

The 2022 US Open semi-finalist's win gave France an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Instead of being in the 12-team Finals, Britain must contest a play-off to earn a spot in the 2024 qualifiers.

Anne Keothavong's squad will be demoted to the Group I stage of the competition - the level below the top world tier and played regionally in the European/African zone - if they lose the tie in November.

  3. Burel in for Garciapublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

We've just heard that Clara Burel will now partner Kristina Mladenovic in the doubles match, with Caroline Garcia getting a rest after winning the third point for France earlier today.

Burel and Mladenovic will be up against the British duo of Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls.

British captain Anne Keothavong on whether she thinks Emma Raducanu will return for the November tie: "I would like to think if she continues playing and is fit and healthy, I see no reason why she wouldn't be part of the team.

"But there is a long time until then and other players to consider. The end of the season is always a tough time and whoever is most fresh and healthy will be part of the team."

  6. Who will France be up against in the Finals?published at 14:34 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

Twelve teams will play in the Billie Jean King Cup finals (previously called the Federation Cup and then the Fed Cup) from 7-12 November, although the venue is yet to be announced.

Holders Switzerland and Australia, who the Swiss beat in the 2022 final, have qualified automatically with nine ties going on this weekend to see nine of the other places.

Kazakhstan, Spain and Czech Republic are through thanks to wins over Poland, Mexico and Ukraine respectively, with France now joining them in advancing.

The latest scores / results (each tie is best of five)...

    • Spain 4-0 Mexico
    • Ukraine 1-3 Czech Republic
    • Great Britain 0-3 France
    • Canada 1-1 Belgium
    • United States 2-0 Austria
    • Slovakia 1-2 Italy
    • Germany 1-1 Brazil
    • Kazakhstan 3-1 Poland
    • Slovenia 0-2 Romania

The last remaining spot will be taken by the hosts or a wildcard.

In the finals the 12 teams will be split into four groups of three, with the winners advancing into the semi-finals and then the final.

The nations that lose this weekend will then drop into the play-offs in November to try to earn their places in the qualifiers for next year's tournament.

Within minutes of Great Britain's defeat, captain Anne Keothavong and Harriet Dart have come into the speak to the media.

"It has been tricky, says Dart. "I haven't felt my best but competed with what I had and left it all out there.

"I missed a few points here and there, it contributed to momentum changes a lot. Not missing by a lot but few points here and there make such a big difference.

"If I tighten them up the match is totally different."

More from France captain Julien Benneteau: "Very proud of my team I told them at he beginning of the week that the focus is to qualify again for the finals, I said 'we have to be there'. I think we deserve to be there. We are very pleased, very happy and now we are waiting for November."

Celebrations this evening? "Yes! For some players it will be quiet because some of them have to play in a tournament next week but for the staff, I'm off next week so yes tonight we are going to go and taste the British beers!"

  9. 'I'm a very happy captain'published at 14:24 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    Dart 1-6 7-6 (12-10) 1-6 Garcia

France captain Julien Benneteau speaking on court after Caroline Garcia's win: "She [Garcia] knew the job was not done yet, yesterday evening she told me 'I'm ready to go tomorrow'. But I was sure about that anyway. I knew I could count on her and the others for the two days.

"I'm a very happy captain, we're glad to be back in the finals."

On support from crowd: "Very lucky to have these supporters clubs. They follow us everywhere, especially when we play in France there are many more but playing away like this they are still here and for us it's a huge support and we thank them very much."

  10. 'A great battle'published at 14:21 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    Dart 1-6 7-6 (12-10) 1-6 Garcia

France's Caroline Garcia speaking on court after her victory: "Great match, great battle again. We knew it would be a battle from the first point to the last across the two days.

"They [GB] proved why they did so well last year. We had to dig deep and I had to stay focused, I'm very pleased with the performance from the beginning of the last set. To get a point for France and the spot in the finals.

"When I played Harriet [Dart] last time she saved match points before I finally could finish the match, she was a great fighter. It was probably hard for them to come back on court after yesterday so I tried to be aggressive and I'm glad it paid off again."

  11. What happens now?published at 14:14 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

That means the singles match between Katie Boulter and Alize Cornet will now not happen.

However, the crowd in Coventry will at least have another match to watch as the doubles clash between British pair Olivia Nicholls and Alicia Barnett will still take place as they face Kristina Mladenovic and Clara Burel, who steps in for original selection Caroline Garcia.

But there will be nothing except pride to play for.

For GB, they will miss out on appearing at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in November - unless they win the right to host it, just as they did in Glasgow last year.

If GB do not host the Finals (the venue has not been confirmed yet) then they will be heading into the play-offs in November, needing to win to get into the tournament qualifiers for 2024.

  12. 'Garcia shows class'published at 14:13 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    Dart 1-6 7-6 (12-10) 1-6 Garcia

    Peter Odgers

Caroline Garcia showing her class once again, she stepped up in the big moments. It would've been easy to fall away and get frustrated after not converting those match points in the second set.

I'm sure Anne [Keothavong] will have said Harriet Dart can hold her head high, she did magnificently well but Garcia is world number five for a reason and she just took that final set away from Dart.
