That's the end of this edition of the live text commentary, but there will be more of the same on Wednesday. If you don't want to miss a minute of the action then set your alarms for 05:15 GMT for the start of the qualification for the women's parallel giant slalom. The curling? The women will start launching stones at 10:00, while the men have a lie-in because their match doesn't start until 15:00. Thanks, as always, for your contributions. Bye for now.

Medals to be won: Alpine skiing (men's giant slalom), biathlon (mixed relay), bobsleigh (women's), cross country skiing (team sprints), snowboard (parallel giant slalom), speed skating (women's 5,000m).

Britons in action: Men's and women's curling teams, Paula Walker and Rebekah Wilson (bobsleigh), Andrew Musgrave and Andrew Young (cross country skiing), Jenna McCorkell (figure skating).

Day in a sentence: GB men and women curlers try to make the Olympic final and Lolo Jones completes her maiden outing as a US Olympic bobsleigher after finishing fourth in the 100m hurdles at London 2012.

Curling fever will grip the nation on Wednesday, of course, as Britain's men and women battle it out in the semi-finals. Eve Muirhead's team have been given a tough assignment and will need to defeat the unbeaten Canadians if they are to reach the final. Indeed, the Canadians are the first female team to ever go undefeated through an Olympic group stage. David Murdoch and his men face Sweden, who lost just one round-robin match.

The white stuff continues to fall from the Sochi sky, which you would have thought is good news considering the Winter Olympics is being held there. It could be the wrong type of snow, though. Those watching the ice hockey need not concern themselves with the weather. The scores are unchanged, with the Czech Republic leading Slovakia 4-1, while Latvia are 2-1 up against Switzerland.

The Czech Republic lead Slovakia 4-1 after two periods, and Latvia are 2-1 up on Switzerland in the battle for the two remaining quarter-final places.

Five-time Winter Olympic skier on BBC TV

"It is great to see ski halfpipe in the winter Olympics, it is just a shame the weather quality in the pipe didn't allow for the skiers to go for more than they can. Even so, the competition was fantastic and the right man won in the end. David Wise is an understated, un-dude. He is not your typical free-ride person.

"Tomorrow, we have the men's giant slalom and hopefully the rain will ease off."

The silver medal will be awarded to Canada's Mike Riddle (90.60) and Kevin Rolland (88.60) secures bronze for France. Thoughts go out to the Frenchman's coach, whose blood pressure must be through the roof.

"Justin Dorey will be so upset because he had the run but David Wise takes the gold. What a fantastic debut for freeskiing halfpipe at the Olympic Games. We have seen some phenomenal skiing."

David Wise becomes the first men's ski halfpipe Olympic champion. The 23-year-old, dubbed the 'undude' for being a family man, secures the big prize thanks to a 92.00 score on his first run.

Can Justin Dorey hold firm or will be crumble like a chocolate flake? It's the latter. He wobbles, squats and fails to complete his run.

  11. Freestyle Skiingpublished at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2014

Stick or twist? David Wise, leader after the first run, gambles and fails, skimming the edge of the pipe and keeling over into the white stuff. A poor effort which is reflected in the 3.40 score. Justin Dorey, what have you got?

Next is Kevin Rolland and his animated coach may start to hyperventilate. He needs some camomile tea. Ouch! Incroyable! Down he goes. The Frenchman cannot improve on his first run - a 29.80 score is all he has to show for that fumbling second run - but he is still in third spot.

A bodacious second run by Mike Riddle and the Canadian raises his arm as he crosses the line after an adrenaline-pumping performance. He had all the grabs in the book: A safety grab, a bow and arrow grab... And his score of 90.60 sees him glide into silver medal-winning position.

Thomas Krief goes for the halfpipe equivalent of the big dipper but stumbles backwards and, then, topples over into the snow. The Frenchman improves on his first score, but his 28.60-point effort isn't anything to shout about. His fall was, though, so that's something at least.

Justin Dorey qualified with top marks, but has to settle for 20.40 after a bumpy first ride in the final. David Wise is looking down on the rest in first place with a score of 92.00, while France's Kevin Rolland (88.60) is second. The second run will begin in a few minutes.

David Wise can file that performance under 'B' for Boom. A 92.00 score for the American and there's no wonder he's showing the world his pearly whites. A tear-inducing run by Justin Dorey, though, as he clatters into the edge of the pipe and onlookers wince. He'll have a sore backside in the morning.

Eye-popping intensity by Kevin Rolland's coach before his man sets off into the abyss, and he then punches the air in delight when his boy's score flashes up on the big screen. The 24-year-old is awarded 88.60 for his twistin' and a turnin' in the snow and goes into the lead.

"I want to recover completely," added Evgeni Plushenko. "If need be, I'll have another 10 operations, have all my intervertebral discs replaced with artificial ones, with implants. Then I'll miss a couple of seasons, perhaps, learn a couple of quadruples and then return to sport.

"Actually, to be more precise, to stay in sport, because I probably need to prove something to a lot of people who have been squealing and chirping. I'm not ruling out that I'll go for a fifth Olympic Games."

After one period, the Czech Republic lead 3-0 in their derby match with Slovakia, while Latvia are 2-0 up on Switzerland. The winners progress to the quarter-finals.

"If Slovakia don't get something going they will get routed here. It's already happened once, 7-1 against the Americans, and they could bookend their tournament like that, start and finish."
