To describe to you what's happening, competitors begin at the top of a slope, racing down ski-jump style to a ramp that points virtually vertically upwards. They fly high, scraping the sky with twists and turns, before falling back to the snowy ground from the height of a six-storey building. It's spectacular, terrifying, mesmerising and down-right crazy all at once.

My word. Thought the double luge was crazy? We haven't even moved the mercury of the bonkersometer. Aerials skiing? They're not kidding. These girls are going miles in the air, flipping over a couple of times, then coming down and attempting to land upright. Absolute madness.

"Home-favourite Alexander Tretiakov may have been fourth in the world standings heading into the Olympics, but he's ripping up that form-book here Sochi.

"Dare I suggest boosted by all those extra training sessions on the ice?

"Well either way he has 0.23 seconds lead over nearest rival Martins Dukurs of Latvia and is a huge 0.94 ahead of USA's Matthew Antoine who's currently third."

Freestyle skiers jump as high as a six-storey building, and are judged in four of the sport's five disciplines on height, the acrobatic tricks they perform, and landings.

The anomaly is ski cross, a chaotic mad dash to the finish down a course loaded with jumps and bumps.

A celebratory sommersault? Or has he just fallen over in what is the biggest moment of his life. Caption competition.

"Team GB's Dominic Parsons trains with Lizzy Yarnold. He would have had a certain level of nerves about his run, as it is his first Olympics.

"He would barely have dreamed of getting into the top 10, so let's see if he can stay in."

"Four-time Olympic rowing gold medallist Sir Matthew Pinsent is in the Sanki sliding centre mixed zone.

"He'll be speaking with Great Britain's former world champion Kristan Bromley and World Cup medal winner Dom Parsons after their second run. He'll then be joining Lizzy Yarnold's family during her bid for Olympic gold later."

Not wanting to be left out, Lizzy Yarnold's sister Katie was also on 5 live.

"I'm very nervous and very excited, I don't think any of us stopped screaming yesterday. We were all shaking and it's so exciting, you just can't describe how you feel.

"She's very well-collected mentally, she's always done individual sports events and always gets into the zone. She doesn't listen to anyone else, puts her music on and does what she needs to do. She doesn't worry about it she's just calm."

Two rather special members of the Yarny Army have been on BBC Radio 5 live to wish their daughter Lizzy Yarnold luck in her quest for gold, which resumes at 15:40 GMT.

Her dad Clive said: "We're as cool as cucumbers, we're excited and full of anticipation. She did a blinding run yesterday and she has been so consistent through this season, starting in America in November and she's been excellent.

"She learnt to ski when she was seven and has been used to being on ice since she was a child, she heard about skeleton four or five years ago and has taken to it like a duck to water.

"It has been amazing her passage through, the training and the whole system of British skeleton. What they are doing works so well and we're just hoping for the best result ever this afternoon."

Right first time, Matt. The Yarny Army it is - a band of followers you will probably be hearing quite a lot about over the next 24 hours or so. For that correct answer, you have one big point to impress your friends with. I'll pop it in the post.

"So little separating the British pair of Dom Parsons - 57.23 - and Kristan Bromley - 57.24 - but they are both some way behind Russia's Alexander Tretiakov's time of 55.95.

"From Bromley that was his quickest time on the track so far, but Parsons has gone quicker with a 57.09 in training.

"Neither expected to challenge for medals but both do have pedigree for success at major events."
