Conor McGregor has clarified that his aunt did not die from coronavirus after earlier on Saturday suggesting that she had.

The 31-year-old Irish mixed martial artist posted his thoughts alongside photos of his family.

He paid an emotional tribute as he wrote that his "lovely little auntie Anne had passed away".

But later he clarified: "I want to clear up that it has been confirmed she was not a victim of coronavirus."

He added: "I am grateful for the kind wishes and sympathy for my Auntie's passing.

"As we prepare for her funeral, I know that many of us will confront the virus in the weeks ahead.

"As I gather with my family, I ask you all to make an extra effort to be there for friends and family during the stressful days ahead."

According to RTE's report on Saturday, there are now more than 100 cases of Covid-19 on the island of Ireland. The first death linked to coronavirus in Ireland - involving an elderly woman with underlying health conditions - was announced on Wednesday.
