Bantamweight Brett Johns' return to the Bellator cage on 12 May is off after the Welshman was forced to withdraw.

The Swansea fighter is being treated for a staph infection which sees him miss the event in Paris.

Johns had been due to take on Brazilian 23-year-old Marcirley Alves da Silva (11-3).

The 31-year-old is 19-3 in his career and 2-1 in Bellator after consecutive wins over Khurshed Kakhorov and Jordan Winski.

"It's very frustrating to pull out of a fight with Staph infection but as a team we were left with no option other than to pull the plug," Johns said on Instagram.

"The annoying part is that I'm not injured whatsoever. If this happened two weeks ago then the story would be different. But this was the hand that I've been dealt.

"I'm hoping to be back on a show in the not too distant future."

Bellator 296 card is headlined by a middleweight fight between Gegard Mousasi and Briton Fabian Edwards while Frenchman Mansour Barnaoui takes on American Brent Primus in the quarter-final of the lightweight grand prix.
