It was a day disrupted by red flags, and our best wishes go out to the two riders involved in the Supersport accident.

We will be back tomorrow for more qualifying from 9am, and the first racing takes place in the evening with three races scheduled.

    See you then.

It has been difficult for the guys spending a lot of time sitting here at the pits and not getting the laps in.

That Supersport practice, there are two or three riders that that will have made a big benefit for, the likes of Michael Dunlop who hasn't been there on that bike.

  4. 'I need every lap I can get'published at 15:11 British Summer Time 7 May

Jackson Racing's Josh Brookes speaking on BBC iPlayer, who was fifth in Supersport qualifying: "I need every lap I can get. I haven't ridden a Supersport bike since the TT last year and it wouldn't be a bike I'm regularly riding.

"I mean, all motorcycles operate and do the same thing, so I can't make excuses that we don't know what it's going to do.

"To refine the package and make it as competitive, you need as much time on the machine as possible."

The teams will not have got enough information on the Superbikes or the Superstocks, that has been limited information.

Supersports, they will have a little bit more information and Supertwins didn't get riding at all.

There will be a lot of frustrated teams out there at the minute but it's happened before, they'll work it out and come back stronger tomorrow.

  8. 'It has been a mad rush'published at 14:51 British Summer Time 7 May

MLav Racing team owner Michael Laverty speaking on BBC iPlayer: "Although I have been here so many times as a child and over the years supporting the event, I have never had a team or competed here myself, so turning up is nice for our first adventure into road racing.

"It's all come together a little bit later that we anticipated by adding the BSB team which we hadn't planned to do. It only came about five weeks ago now so it has been a mad rush getting the staff, the parts and everything we need to get on track but we're in reasonably good shape."

  9. Red flags have stifled practice sessionpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 7 May

Michael Dunlop tells BBC Sport NI the lack of track time in Wednesday's first qualifying session for the North West 200 has been frustrating.

  10. 'It is great that they are going to get out there'published at 14:45 British Summer Time 7 May

    Steve Parrish
    BBC Sport NI commentator

I think these guys would be happy to get one lap if you want to break in some brake pads in or just want to check some gearing.

One single solitary lap would do these guys, so it is great that they are going to get out there.

  11. Supersports heading back out....published at 14:44 British Summer Time 7 May

    Supersport qualifying

BBC Sport NI presenter Stephen Watson provided an update from the incident that brought out the red flag in Supersport qualifying:

"The latest we have is that there was a racing incident during that qualifying and more than one rider were involved in that.

"One has been taken to hospital in an ambulance. The air ambulance has attended the scene and the other rider has just left in the air ambulance.

"That is all the information we have at the moment and we will await official confirmation from the event director and the North West 200 team as to whether this qualifying session can restart."

  13. red flag

The word from race control is that the red flag in Supersport session was for a "Qualifying incident on track".

We've yet to have confirmation if we'll see any more track action today. The roads will be re-opened at 3pm, so time is running out for any potential restart.

  14. 'Gears left us really on the back foot'published at 14:14 British Summer Time 7 May

Home favourite Michael Dunlop speaking on BBC iPlayer: "I have only done three laps, some of the other boys got a few more laps.

"With the Superbike and the lack of having gears left us really on the back foot.

"We done a lap and then in, so it's been a bit frustrating and then a few red flags have halted it and that is just the way it goes.

"When you're left so late with stuff, it's been hard work.

"I understand everyone has worked hard to get it. But the outcome is still the same whether they work hard or not, when you're left that long it leaves you on the back foot a little bit.

"However we'll work hard tonight. The two laps that we have done, we have a lot of data to see where we have to be."

  15. 'I wish I had done the North West 200 a lot earlier'published at 14:06 British Summer Time 7 May

South African rider AJ Venter speaking on BBC iPlayer: "The weather here is unbelievable. It's freezing back at home in South Africa and it's boiling hot and I'm sweating here!

"The roads sucked me in with the TT and now the North West 200. I wish I had done the North West 200 a lot earlier.

"It's also giving the South Africans a lot more information and spreading the word about the road racing side of things."

  16. 'It puts a bit more pressure on Thursday'published at 14:00 British Summer Time 7 May

Neil Kernohan speaking on BBC iPlayer: "There are a lot of people in the same boat who need a lot of practice. The sun is out and everyone wants to be out, but we can't get out.

"It puts a bit more pressure [on tomorrow] as you normally use the first day of practice for a bit of set-up and then go back to the drawing board and make a few changes for the practice on Thursday morning to get set-up for the race on the Thursday night, so it puts you on the back step.

  17. 'I will enjoy this year'published at 13:56 British Summer Time 7 May

French rider Pierre-Yves Bian speaking on BBC iPlayer: "I am happy to be back and the bike looks well so we will ride soon again.

"Last year I crashed my bike just before the North West 200 and this is one of my favourite races, so I will enjoy this year."

    Richard Petrie
BBC Sport at the North West 200

Dean Harrison says he hopes to be challenging for wins at the front of the pack when he contests this year's North West 200 with a full stable of machinery at his disposal from his Honda Racing team.

The Bradford rider, now resident in Laxey in the Isle of Man, rode only a Superstock bike at last year's meeting but still managed a second place in that class, followed by third position in Saturday's feature Superbike race at the event held over the 8.9-mile Triangle circuit.

His team did not field Superbike or Supersport machines at the meeting 12 months ago because of "the demands of the 2024 calendar and schedule, combined with challenges in the supply chain regarding parts and materials".

"The North West 200 is one of the biggest races of the year for us. We had our ups and downs last year but this year we've got a lot more preparation under our belt so we're hitting the ground running with what we learnt last year," Harrison told BBC Sport NI.

"It did set us back a little bit but it was just one of those things. With it being a brand new bike and everything coming a little bit late it didn't help the situation.

"We had to come with one bike but regardless I think we did a good job."

Richard Cooper says the North West 200 is one of his favourite events on the racing calendar, his love for the event accentuated by the success he has enjoyed over the Triangle circuit since making his debut in 2019.

The 42-year-old Nottingham rider grabbed a second place in his first year and has won four Supertwins races at the meeting, adding a Supersport victory in 2024 to his tally of wins.

"I've had some great results. Some difficult times, but fundamentally one of my favourite weeks of the year for sure and on top of things I like to do in a year," Cooper told BBC Sport NI.

"I came here in 2019 with no expectations, built up nicely and ended the week with a podium. Since that we've been competitive in every class we've ridden and when you get results you begin to enjoy a place.

"The fact you can have a little bit of a holiday too and enjoy the seaside it makes it a special place. When the sun shines there's no place like it."
