Donegal manager Jim McGuinness admits his side were outplayed by Mayo

Donegal manager Jim McGuinness was non-committal about his future in the role after his team's stunning All-Ireland Quarter-Final defeat by Mayo on Sunday.

"We have to look at the squad and ourselves," said McGuinness after Mayo routed his team 4-17 to 1-10.

"We have to weigh all that up and that's what we do every year.

"That's what we did in 2011 in the lead-in to 2012 and do an honest appraisal of where we're at. After that we'll know a lot more."

McGuinness said that he had "no complaints whatsoever" about Sunday's result.

"Mayo brought a serious amount of hunger and desire to the game. They were the better team on the day.

"We'll have to go back and look at if it was hunger or all the niggles we had within the squad or maybe a combination of both and analyse all that over the next number of weeks.

"But it's not a day to be making excuses. It's a day to be tipping your hat to the opposition."

McGuinness acknowledged that his team's performance had been "sluggish and lethargic".

"It's a very tough day for Donegal and for everyone in the dressing-room and not least the supporters.

"It's a hard thing to take. We went into the game with big expectations.

"We were hoping we would put in a big, big performance but when the first goal went in, it rocked us and after the second goal it was going to be a tough battle."

A "delighted" Mayo manager James Horan acknowledged that his team had produced a "strong" performance.

"There is no doubt about that," said the Mayo boss.

"We prepared well. We were hungry and got a couple of early goals which gave us a bit of a surge.

"We built on it from there and kept building throughout the game."

Despite the pre-match talk suggesting friction between the two managements, Horan paid tribute to the vanquished champions after visiting the Donegal dressing-room following the final whistle.

"Donegal have been unbelievable All-Ireland champions and have represented the honour very well."

Tyrone are next for Horan's squad on 25 August and the Mayo boss spoke of his respect for the Red Hand squad and Mickey Harte.

"They are a very strong team with a very good manager. They have some outstanding players.

"But as we always do, we'll prepare for it and look forward to the challenge."
