World Superbikes: Jonathan Rea has day to forget as Bautista earns Portimao treble
- Published
Jonathan Rea had a Sunday to forget at the World Superbike round in Portimao as he crashed out of the sprint race and was then handed a lap penalty in race two where he eventually was 10th.
Rea's coming together with Yamaha's Andrea Locatelli saw him exit on the first lap of the superpole race.
The Northern Irishman received his race-two lap penalty for taking out Spanish rider Xavi Vierge on lap five.
Alvaro Bautista's weekend treble extended his series lead to 60 points.
And while the title race does go into the final round in Jerez later this month, Bautista is in a hugely strong position with a maximum 62 points available to second-placed Toprak Razgatlioglu, who was runner-up in all three races in Portugal.
After winning race one on Saturday, defending champion Bautista finished ahead of Razgatlioglu and Locatelli in the sprint race and the top two were unchanged in race two as Michael Ruben Rinaldi completed the podium positions.
Bautista's race two triumph was his 56th World Superbike win, breaking the record for a Ducati rider.
Rea was involved in a second incident in as many races he hit Xavi Vierge at turn three, which resulted in the Spaniard crashing.
Following several overtakes during the final three laps, Razgatlioglu was again pipped over the line by Bautista, which led to a devastated Razgatlioglu hitting the tank of his Yamaha in frustration after crossing the line.
