Jonny Brownlee wins the World Triathlon Series in Madrid

Jonny Brownlee won his second straight World Triathlon Series race in Madrid.

The 22-year-old, who was victorious in San Diego a fortnight ago, put in a highly impressive display on the bike before going on to secure victory.

He finished ahead of the Russian pair, Alexander Bryukhankov and Dmitry Polyansky.

But there was disappointment for Tim Don. Needing a podium finish to clinch Team GB's final Olympic triathlon spot, he dropped out of the run.

The 34-year-old was in trouble from the off, first getting left behind during the swim, before withdrawing from the race on the first lap of the run.

Brownlee, who will compete in the 2012 Olympics with brother Alistair and is almost fully fit after an Achilles injury, was in the top half of the field after the swim.

He then raced to the front of the group on the bike, moving clear of fellow Britons Will Clarke and Stuart Hayes.

The gap was initially only a few seconds but by the end of the third lap the leading pack were more than a minute clear of the chasing groups.

Brownlee never looked back and wrapped up the win.

The Olympic qualification period has now finished and selectors will meet during the next week to decide who will fill the final place in the men's team and two places in the women's team. Team GB is expected to be announced by the British Olympic Association in early June.

British Triathlon Olympic performance manager Malcolm Brown said: "We'll look at performances over the last 18 months and consider all the options."

He added: "It was an outstanding performance from Jonny. He has moved forwards since San Diego just two weeks ago."
