Olympics badminton: Ireland's Chloe Magee out of singles

Irish girl Chloe Magee has missed out on a place in the last 16 of the women's singles at the London Olympics after losing to Hongyang Pi of France.

The Donegal woman won the first set 21-16 but lost the next two sets 21-18, 21-14 to lose by two sets to one and crash out of the competition.

Chinese born Pi is ranked among the top 10 players in the world and won a bronze medal at the 2009 World Championships.

Magee had competed in Beijing in 2008.

Raphoe woman Magee, 23, began her campaign with an impressive straight sets win over Egypt's Hadia Hosny in her opening match.

Dubliner Scott Evans was knocked out of the men's singles on Monday afternoon by Olympic and world champion Lin Dan of China.

Evans saved two match points before losing 21-8 21-14.

Magee's opponent Pi has progressed to at least the quarter-finals at the last six World Championships and she reached the last eight in Beijing.

"It was disappointing not to take the match after such a great start," said Magee after her defeat on Tuesday.

"I really had chances in the second and third sets and I just made some unnecessary errors.

"Training has been great that past months and I would like to thank all involved."
