Gymnast Kristian Thomas: 'British among world's best'

Kristian Thomas believes Britain's gymnasts are set for "great things", despite narrowly missing out on a medal after a slip in his all-around final.

Thomas stumbled on his vault routine and finished seventh.

But, with one final still remaining, he already has an historic bronze medal from the men's team final on Monday.

"We knew we were good, but [the Games] have made us realise we are one of the best teams in the world," said the British gymnast.

"Hopefully this is the start of great things. I think I've set a new [British] record as the highest a male gymnast has finished in the all-around in the modern era. How can I not be happy with that?"

The 23-year-old chose the toughest vault routine as he threw everything at an all-around medal and said he did not regret the choice.

"Would I do it again? Definitely," he said. "Some people might say play safe, but if you go all-out, you've got nothing to lose.

"Hopefully, I've got the bad one out of the way now and the good one will be in the vault final [on Sunday]."

Dan Purvis, who finished 13th, admitted he had "rushed into a move" when he fell on parallel bars, ruining his own hopes.

"It's not what we're used to, all the media," he said, referring to the response to the team's bronze medal on Monday.

"I've not had that much sleep. I'm not using that as an excuse - it was great - but at the same time it was quite hard."
