Olympics badminton: Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng claim doubles gold

Men's doubles pair Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng claimed gold on Sunday to give China all five badminton titles available at this Olympics.

The pair outplayed Danish duo Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen 21-16 21-15 to add to Chinese success in the men's and women's singles and the women's and mixed doubles.

China enjoyed most of the momentum in the final with Denmark always chasing.

Cai and Fu have added Olympic gold to their 2011 World Championship title.

Only once before has a badminton player from a non-Asian nation won gold - Danish competitor Poul-Erik Hoyer Larsen in the men's singles at Atlanta 1996. Boe and Mogensen were bidding to follow their countryman's example at Wembley Arena.

But in truth the final was all China's. Denmark battled valiantly but Cai and Fu proved exceptional opposition, displaying grit and guile in equal measure.

Denmark overcame fancied South Korea pairing Chung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae on Saturday in explosive fashion, and China seemed to have taken note - Cai and Fu played an unusually cautious style of badminton, amassing points with set plays and canny serves.

In contrast, several set plays attempted by Boe and Mogensen were repelled, and as both the first and second games wore on it became apparent who would emerge victorious.

The end came with a spectacular smash from Cai, before the duo span and embraced in celebration. China's dominance of badminton at London 2012 was complete.
