Boxer Fred Evans beat world number one Taras Shelestyuk 11-10 in the semi-finals to guarantee at least a silver on day 14 at London 2012.

Sailor Hannah Mills won a silver medal, after failing to beat New Zealand in the chase for gold.

Mills and Saskia Clark started the day on level points with the Kiwi crew but failed to overhaul their rivals.

New Zealand were also the opponents for Sarah Thomas in the women's hockey and she claimed bronze in a 3-1 win for GB.

The boxing ended a packed day of Olympic action on Friday and welterweight Evans leapt out into a 4-1 lead after the first round.

That proved crucial, as Evans matched the Ukrainian blow for blow in the second before weathering a late storm in the final three minutes to win the battle of the southpaws.

Evans was already guaranteed a bronze after the Cardiff man beat Canada's Custio Clayton in the previous round at the ExCel Arena.

But the 21-year-old will now fight for the gold medal on Sunday, claiming just Wales' second Olympic boxing medal after Ralph Evans' bronze in Munich 1972.

Evans will face Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan in the final after he beat Russia's Andrey Zamkovoy 18-12.

Dai Greene took the third leg of GB's 4x400m relay team that finished fourth in Friday's final, behind winners Bahamas, United States and Trinidad & Tobago.

Christian Malcolm was part of the GB 4x100m relay team that was disqualified in their heat after a mistake on the final changeover between Daniel Talbot and Adam Gemili.

"We are a team. It's unfortunate. It's one of those things that happens but it's a fantastic performance to run the time we did," Malcolm said.

"Daniel has come in at the last moment. This is a big stadium and it can be overwhelming."

Mills' second-place finish ensures Wales have a record seven medals in one Games.

The nation has won five Olympic medals on four separate occasions - 1908, 1912, 1948 and 2008.

Cyclist Geraint Thomas, rower Tom James and taekwondo player Jade Jones have already won gold with another rower, Chris Bartley having won silver at London 2012.

Thomas, from Merthyr, and the rest of the Team GB hockey team lost out on the chance to compete for a gold medal when they were beaten 2-1 by Argentina in the semi-finals.

But they took a 3-0 lead over the Black Sticks at the Riverbank Arena in the bronze medal play-off, with Thomas adding the third from a well-worked penalty corner, although New Zealand scored a late consolation.

Meanwhile, Frankie Jones went out of the rhythmic gymnastics on day 14 after finishing 24th following two days of competition.
