Belfast boxer Sean McComb ensured at least a bronze medal at the inaugural European Games in Baku by winning his lightweight quarter-final on Tuesday.

McComb secured a unanimous points decision over Turkey's Yasin Yilmaz, with all three of the judges' scorecards reading 29-28 in his favour.

The 22-year-old southpaw, a member of the Holy Trinity club, will face Albert Selimov in Friday's semi-final.

Light-flyweight Brendan Irvine sealed Ireland's first medal on Monday.

The 19-year-old, also from Belfast, produced a masterful display in his quarter-final to beat home fighter and top seed Salman Alizada on a split decision to guarantee himself at least a bronze.

McComb, who is seeded four in the 60kg category, won the opening round on the card of the three judges, while two adjudged that the Irish fighter came out on top in the second round.

The bout started slowly, before some excellent combinations from McComb saw him ease ahead, although his opponent was more aggressive in the second.

Yilmaz, also a southpaw, rallied somewhat in the third round, but it was the reigning two-time Irish national champion who progressed to face Selimov of Azerbaijan.

Badminton player Chloe Magee from Donegal won her second group game on Tuesday

The home hero, a former World and European Championship gold medallist, is the only boxer to have beaten Vasyl Lomanchenko as an amateur.

The pair will contest their semi-final at 09:00 BST on Friday, with McComb's ultimate goal being next summer's Olympic Games in Rio.

The World Championships in Qatar in November are a direct qualifier for the Olympics and McComb must either finish top of the 60kg pile, reach the final or lose to the eventual winner in the semi-finals to get one of the top three places for the Worlds offered by the European Games.

McComb had already enjoyed unanimous victories over Ukraine's Tymur Beliak Italy's Donato Cosenza.

One of McComb's fellow Irish boxers, light-welterweight Dean Walsh, was knocked out of as he was defeated by Germany's Kastriot Sopa in the light welterweight quarter-finals.

Welterweight Adam Nolan is also out after his 2-1 defeat by Britain's Josh Kelly.

Meanwhile in badminton, Chloe Magee eased through her second group game, defeating Kristine Sefere in the singles Group F encounter.

The Irish Olympian was rarely troubled by her Latvian opponent and secured the 2-0 victory in just over 22 minutes with a scoreline of 21-9, 21-7.

The number six seed was beaten in her opening game and will face Lianne Tan from Belgium on Wednesday as she looks to progress through the group stage to the last 16.

Magee was back in action later on Tuesday as she competed in the mixed doubles with her brother Sam, and the top seeded Irish siblings proved too strong for Povilas Bartusis and Vytaute Fomkinaite of Lithuania, winning the match 2-0 (21-8, 21-10) in 22 minutes.

Sam Magee and his brother Joshua defeated Portugal's Ricardo and Angelo Silva 21-15, 21-15 in the men's doubles.
