Rio Olympics 2016: Joshua Kelly progresses as three GB boxers lose

British boxer Joshua Kelly won on his Olympic debut but three of his compatriots were beaten at the 2016 Olympics in Rio on Tuesday.

Kelly, 22, beat Egypt's Walid Mohamed by a unanimous decision to reach the last 16 of the welterweight division.

However, Lawrence Okolie, Anthony Fowler and Galal Yafai all lost their bouts.

Okolie had arguably the toughest test as he was beaten by Cuba's Erislandy Savon, nephew of Olympic legend Felix.

Okolie impressed when he beat Poland's Igor Jakubowski in the last 32 of the heavyweight division on Saturday.

However, he was no match for Savon, who beat him with a first-round knockout in the World Series of Boxing three months ago.

Okolie was again floored in the first round, although this time he made it to the end of the bout before losing on points.

Fowler, cousin of former Liverpool footballer Robbie, was outpointed by middleweight Zharibek Alimkhanuly in last 32.

The 25-year-old, who won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, failed to recover after being dropped in the second round.

Yafai, 23, was beaten by Cuba's world champion Joahnys Argilagos in the last 16 of the light-flyweight competition.

It was a close fight, with two of the three judges scoring it in favour of Argilagos.

Elsewhere in the men's light-flyweight division, Ireland's Paddy Barnes - bronze medallist in 2008 and 2012 - suffered a surprise elimination at the hands of Samuel Carmona Heredia on points.
