Fionnuala McCormack came in 28th as Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won the women's marathon in Paris.

McCormack created history as the first women to compete for Ireland in five Olympic Games.

The 39-year-old from Wicklow clocked a season's best time of 2:30.12 in Sunday morning's race.

McCormack was the only Team Ireland runner in either the men's or women's marathons.

Hasson set a new Olympic record of 2:22:55 as she won by just three seconds from Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa.

Hellen Obiri of Kenya secured the bronze medal with a third-placed finish at Les Invalides.
