Rowing World Cup: Britain claim four golds in Lucerne

Great Britain won four gold medals at the season's third and final World Cup event in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Olympic champions Helen Glover and Heather Stanning won the women's pair, while Kat Copeland and Imogen Walsh claimed the lightweight double sculls.

Alex Gregory, Mohamed Sbihi, George Nash and Andrew Triggs Hodge led from the start to take the men's four gold.

Graeme Thomas, Sam Townsend, Charles Cousins and Peter Lambert timed a late run well to win the quadruple sculls.

All four successful British crews won for the second consecutive World Cup event, following their victories at Aiguebelette, France, three weeks ago.

Britain also won two silvers, in the men's pair and the men's coxed pair, while bronze medals came in the lightweight men's pair, the lightweight men's four, the women's eight and the men's eight.

The regatta was the last World Cup event before the World Championships, which take place in Amsterdam from 24 to 31 August.

GB performance director Sir David Tanner said: "It has been a very positive day today with our 11 Olympic class finalists and eight medals from those, as well as our two medals from the international classes.

"Lucerne has not always been our finest regatta but today we have laid a very good base for our World Championships campaign."
