Wigan Warriors coach Michael Maguire has backed his assistant Shaun Wane to succeed him next season.

Maguire returns to Australia at the end of the Super League campaign to take over at NRL side South Sydney and wants Wane to take on the head coach role.

"I really believe that he's a person that could take this club further forward," he told BBC Radio Manchester.

"From my time here he's definitely jumped on board with what I've brought to the place."

Club chairman Ian Lenegan said Wane is the favourite for the job and Maguire feels the former Wigan and Great Britain forward is an example of a good, young British coach.

"He's working extremely hard for me and showing himself as being a very good coach," Maguire said.
