Bradford Bulls sign Crusaders wing Elliot Kear

South Wales-born Kear came through the ranks at the Cardiff Demons

Bradford Bulls have beaten off interest from Widnes to sign Wales international Elliot Kear on a three-year contract.

The 22-year-old, who featured for Crusaders before their demise, can play either wing or full-back.

"When Crusaders folded, I phoned my agent and asked him to start looking around," said Kear.

"After a couple of months there was a bit of interest before Widnes made me an offer, but then Bradford came in and my dad and I were over the moon."

Kear, currently training with the Welsh squad ahead of the Four Nations opener against England at Leigh on 29 October, added: "If you had told me 12 months ago that I'd be signing for Bradford I'd have laughed in your face.

"I started following Super League a few years ago and began supporting the Bulls. I remember them winning everything and just ripping up the competition.

"My dad bought me the 2007 centenary Bulls shirt for Christmas and to be playing for them now is unbelievable.

"Nobody who knows anything about rugby league needs telling about Bradford Bulls.

"They are a massive club and ruled the roost for years. Getting back into the play-offs has to be the main aim next season."

After three Grand Final wins under Brian Noble between 2001 and 2005, Bradford have now finished outside the Super League's top eight three seasons running.

"Elliot Kear is one of the most exciting young rugby league prospects to emerge from the union heartland of South Wales," said Bulls chairman Peter Hood. "Bradford fans will remember how he impressed at Odsal playing for Crusaders this year.

"I am personally very pleased that we have been able to respond so positively to the RFL's plea on behalf of former Crusaders players."
