Super League leaders Wigan are in talks to sign Salford half-back Matty Smith, according to Warriors coach Shaun Wane.

The 24-year-old is approaching the end of his contract with the Reds.

Salford coach Phil Veivers said on Thursday that he expected Smith to leave at the end of the season, with Wigan among the clubs chasing him.

And Wane confirmed to BBC Radio Manchester: "We're speaking to Matty. There's been no offer made, but we're very interested in him."

St Helens and Widnes are also believed to have registered an interest in Smith, who has also been offered the chance to remain at Salford.

Wane is also hoping to persuade Brett Finch to stay with the Warriors next season.

"We're still talking to Brett so there's no change there," added Wane. "We've made an offer to him and he's deciding what to do.

"I know I need to work on things and make sure we've got things in place for next year, but I'm happy with the way things are ticking along."

Wigan moved three points clear at the top of Super League with a comprehensive 50-8 victory at Leeds on Friday, while closest challengers Warrington, Catalan Dragons and Huddersfield were all beaten.
