Unai Emery has come in and changed Aston Villa's fortunes. Big names have come here and not done that and it's not explainable. Jose Mourinho won titles at Chelsea and couldn't do it.

Louis van Gaal won championships and couldn't do it here. Sometimes, you just cannot explain it.

  3. 'Man Utd need someone simplifying things'published at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on the Monday Night Club

Manchester United this season and for large parts of last season did not score enough goals. They could do with someone just coming in and really simplifying things.

  4. Man Utd in Amorim talkspublished at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester United are in talks around a potential appointment of Sporting coach Ruben Amorim to replace Erik ten Hag.

The extent of the talks are not known. It is not clear either whether other alternatives remain in the frame to take the job.

Speaking earlier on Monday, Amorim said he was expecting the question [about United] but was not prepared to talk about the future.

United have appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager but have so far refused to clarify how long the Dutchman will remain in charge, or whether he will definitely be in post for Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie with Leicester at Old Trafford.

The club has already ruled out Van Nistelrooy conducting a pre-match press conference on Tuesday. Ten Hag spoke about the EFL Cup game after Sunday's defeat by West Ham.

Although United have spoken about the financial impact of paying compensation to Ten Hag and an incoming coach, others with a knowledge of United’s finances, have suggested this will not be an insurmountable issue.

  5. 'They are not an elite group of players'published at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Chris Sutton

Are the players good enough? I think we all agree that they are not an elite group of players, so that is an issue.

So in the short term the most important thing for Van Nistelrooy is to put an organised team out on the pitch that the fans can buy in to - and win. Try to build a bit of momentum and confidence.

I don't understand why Eddie Howe isn't being mentioned in these conversations. Past history with the technical director, good at coaching young players, and managing a club whose ambitions are wavering Might be a good time to switch. He got Newcastle to the Champions League where they beat PSG after all.

  7. 'Time to go for a coach'published at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on the Monday Night Club

The structure that is in place now, they will always be above a manager or a coach. Thomas Tuchel looked at that and thought he had to rebuild that, I have to explain myself before and after every game. If I'm taking this job, I have to take charge of every bit of this football club.

The structure fits someone like Ruben Amorim or Thomas Frank who can work in this structure. We've not tried this yet, it could be the time to try a coach. Roberto De Zerbi would have worked, he's a pure coach.

There's a few names there on the list of possible candidates. That structure that they've put in place now, it has to work 100% to make it happen.

  8. 'Man United would have pressed very hard to keep Van Nistelrooy'published at 19:49 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Marcel van der Kraan
Dutch football journalist speaking to Monday Night Club

I think Manchester United would have pressed Ruud van Nistelrooy very hard to stay. It was understood in the summer that if Erik ten Hag went, Van Nistelrooy would follow him. He's not the type to stab Erik ten Hag in the back.

  9. 'I don't think it is an easy job'published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Chris Sutton
BBC Sport pundit on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think it is anywhere near the job it would have been 10 years ago. I don't think it is any easy job or as attractive as it should be.

  10. 'Van Nistelrooy understands English football'published at 19:43 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Marcel van der Kraan
Dutch football journalist speaking to Monday Night Club

There was speculation that Ruud van Nistelrooy was waiting to come for a full-time role. He made it clear he didn't come here to quickly jump in when Erik ten Hag goes. He thought he could contribute to the development of players, young players in particular, he wanted to contribute to what the team needed.

Erik ten Hag went to Manchester United with no knowledge of the English game and I've always said of all managers going to England, unless you've soaked up that atmosphere, you don't know what's going to hit you.

Erik struggled, Ruud understands it, he has some experience of managing a team. After some build-up at PSV, in his first season, he won two trophies. In both cases, he beat Ajax who were very good. The way he played with that PSV Eindhoven team was impressive.

  11. 'Man Utd have the money to get a new manager'published at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Mark Ogden
Senior writer for ESPN on the Monday Night Club

Man United in a situation where they've reported losses over around £100m which is right at the limit, but I am told they do have the money to get a manager in.

Ruben Almorim has a release clause of around 10m euros, which is about £8m. There's a couple of managers at Premier League clubs whose release clauses are double that, it's worth it because that's only a quarter of Matthijs de Ligt or Joshua Zirkzee. It's not ideal but you've got to see value.

  12. 'They are miles behind City, Liverpool and Arsenal'published at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Chris Sutton
BBC Sport pundit on BBC Radio 5 Live

In terms of recruitment, they have been making it up as they go along. There have been short-term fixes and development players who aren't at the required level. And that has been a problem.

Maybe we are in an era where United cannot attract the top, top players because they are not a top, top club anymore? They are miles behind City, Liverpool and Arsenal, which is a problem when it comes to recruitment.

  13. 'I think it's an attractive job'published at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on the Monday Night Club

When you talk about the structure of the football club, there are people now responsible for recruitment, scouting - that is not the manager. A lot of people working above the manager.

We've tried the big managers, the big names and it hasn't worked out. I don't mind if we appoint the next one who is just a coach, takes care of the team, has an input but looks at the solution. It is the modern way to do that, so why not consider it?

I think it's an attractive job, the playing staff isn't terrible, there just isn't a structure that can be leaned upon. Are we pressing? Are we keeping the ball? Someone who spends all their time on the training pitch, I think that is a good idea.

  14. 'It shows how far they have fallen'published at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Chris Sutton
BBC Sport pundit on BBC Radio 5 Live

Isn't it incredible that we are talking about the manager of Sporting potentially turning down Manchester United.

That would have been unthinkable a decade ago and shows what a mess they are in and how far they have fallen.

  15. 'Man Utd would do really well to get Amorim'published at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Mark Ogden
Senior writer for ESPN on the Monday Night Club

Man United aren't saying anything, which normally means there is something in it. Ruben Amorim is a brilliant coach. He's a very confident, very ballsy coach. There's a bit of Mourinho about him. If they can get Amorim over the line, it would be an extremely good appointment given the situation.

He is however said to be high on Manchester City's list. Sporting are at the top of the league in Portugal, they've won nine games out of nine, haven't lost a game in the Champions League. He's very highly rated and United would do really well to get him.

  16. 'United have to get this sorted now'published at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on the Monday Night Club

Ruben Amorim is a great candidate, I'm convinced about that. I'm also convinced he could replace Pep Guardiola. It has to be resolved now, Man United have to stop what has happened so far and look to the future, we've already wasted so many years on not being very good. We're so far behind Manchester City, so far behind Liverpool, so far behind Arsenal, that process has to start now.

  17. 'There has been a massive regression'published at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Chris Sutton
BBC Sport pundit on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think it has overwhelmed him. I think some of his post-match press conferences were delusional towards the end. He was seeing a totally different game.

He did well first season and we all have sympathy for the mess he took over. It was toxic when he went in and I'm not sure it is much better.

He has problems with Ronaldo, undermined by Jadon Sancho, had issues with Marcus Rashford. So he has had a lot to content with.

But is comes down to supporters seeing progress on the pitch. There was in the first season but there has been a massive regression. And the fact he has spent a massive amount of money comes into the equation.

  18. 'Tuchel was close to getting the job'published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Mark Ogden
Senior writer for ESPN on BBC Radio 5 Live

I've been told that Thomas Tuchel was very close getting the job but I think he had reservations at the last minute about the structure he was walking into. He only lasted for five minutes at Chelsea under a new regime and I think he wanted to avoid coming into something similar again.

  19. 'You have to be mentally strong to play for Manchester Unitedpublished at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on the Monday Night Club

Of course the manager needs money, but he has to buy players that fit the club. Manchester United is probably the hardest place in the world to play football. Every piece of media in the world has spoken about this all day. You don't necessarily have to be the best player, but you have to be so mentally strong.

Who has been there to help Erik ten Hag? Nobody. At Ajax, they did brilliantly and got all of the way to the Champions League semi-final. Manchester United and Ajax are so different.

The pressure is relentless. Everything you do will be under a microscope. Ajax is not like that, people in Thailand and Argentina aren't looking at everything they do. There are players who should not be there.

This is where Sir Alex Ferguson was fantastic, he would not just sign a player. He'd find out everything about them and their family, know what kind of player he was bringing in. They haven't recorded.

They've signed some good players, but not signed enough players have been capable of winning for Manchester United. That's why for so many years, the club has not achieved what they have wanted to. The Premier League has not been work, the Champions League has not been won.

  20. 'A very imbalanced squad'published at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October

    Man Utd sack Ten Hag

    Mark Ogden
Senior writer for ESPN on BBC Radio 5 Live

Whoever comes in has to inherit a squad with players that were signed by Jose Mourinho and Erik ten Hag. Good luck who comes in to that, because that is a very imbalanced squad.
