London Broncos 30-44 Salford: Gaskell treble in Reds victory

Lee Gaskell scored a first-half hat-trick as Salford climbed off the bottom of Super League and above hosts London.

Jamie Soward, who only arrived from Australia on Saturday morning, scored a try and kicked 10 points for Broncos.

Ashley Gibson, Jodie Broughton and Wayne Godwin were also on target for Salford, Erjon Dollapi for the hosts.

The Reds led 34-6 at the break and Theo Fages and Broughton crossed afterwards, Mike Bishay, Jacob Fairbank and Daniel Sarginson replying for London.

The eight-try victory secured the Reds their first away win of the season.

Salford scored from their first attack of the game as great work from Broughton down the left-hand side set up Gaskell to go over, with Marc Sneyd kicking the extras.

The visitors' second try came courtesy of a free-flowing move with Gaskell supplying the vital pass for Gibson.

Broughton dashed 70 metres to score and Gaskell strolled in for his second as Salford made it three tries in five minutes, with Sneyd successful with two of three conversion attempts.

Godwin took advantage of lax London defending to score the Reds' fifth try and Sneyd took his tally with the boot to eight points.

NRL star Soward, who had barely stepped off the plane, was brought on by London as a replacement in the 25th minute and looked their liveliest player.

Replacement Dollapi powered in under the posts and Soward kicked the extras to get Broncos on the board, but Gaskell burst his way through the middle to complete his hat-trick, with Sneyd's boot accurate again.

It gave the visitors a 28-point first-half lead but Broncos turned up the heat with two early tries in the second half.

Soward twice added the extras with replacements Bishay and Fairbank going over within three minutes of each other.

But any hopes of a London comeback were ended when Fages raced in for Salford's seventh try and Sneyd successfully kicked his sixth goal from seven attempts.

Soward converted his own try to add the gloss to a fantastic personal performance for the London debutant.

Broughton went over for his second and Salford's eighth try but Sneyd, for the second time, hit the posts with the conversion attempt.

Kieran Dixon's break set up Sarginson and Soward's conversion took his personal tally to 14 points.

London coach Tony Rea said:

"With hindsight it is easy to say we should have played Jamie [Soward] from the start, but it never pays to look back in this game.

"In my mind it was all about protecting him and in an ideal world he would have had a good week with the team before playing.

"It is frustrating at the moment as I think just scratching under the surface there is a great performance waiting to happen, and I am sure that performance will come."

Salford coach Brian Noble:

"We have been creating opportunities on a regular basis but not taking them, but today was a different story.

"We know when we are on our game we can score points and I have known that for some time.

"It has been a while since we have been in the winner's enclosure so I suppose it was understandable that we dropped off a bit.

"But when we get our execution right we know we can compete with the bigger teams."
