Warrington's Micky Higham edges closer to new Wolves deal

Warrington coach Tony Smith has said he is considering offering a new contract to veteran hooker Micky Higham.

The 32-year-old scored one of two late tries as the Wire defeated Super League leaders Wigan 22-12 on Monday.

Ex-England man Higham is contracted to Warrington until the end of the 2013 season but may extend his stay.

"We'll certainly look at Micky and some others. If they're in the right sort of form, it helps their cause," Smith told BBC North West Sport.

"He's a terrific player and he's in some of the best form of his life. Aside from being there to score that try, I thought he was a real spark for us."

Higham has also indicated he would like to remain at the Halliwell Jones Stadium next year, telling BBC Radio Merseyside: "I'm feeling fresh and it's great when you've got players around you that make your job a little bit easier.

"If I can keep myself fit and healthy, hopefully I can go round again. There's still a bit of life left in these old legs."

One player who will definitely depart at the end of the campaign is prop Garreth Carvell, who has agreed a move to Bradford Bulls.

Warrington halted Wigan's run of 11 consecutive victories, scoring two tries in the final five minutes of a high-quality encounter.

The result closed the gap between the Wolves - who lie third - and the Warriors to four points, while also keeping alive their hopes of winning the League Leaders' Shield for a second time in three seasons.

"It was a tough game and probably a game we needed because we've had a few comfortable victories in the last few weeks," said Higham, who joined Warrington in 2009.

"To find a way to come from behind and get a win against a quality side is pretty pleasing.

"It was a lightning game from the first kick-off and all the way through. Those are the games you want to play in, the ones with a play-off intensity."
