Matthew Russell crossed for two of Warrington's six tries

Warrington Wolves won an entertaining game at the Halliwell Jones Stadium to leave Hull KR bottom of Super League.

Josh Mantellato put Rovers six points ahead early on before Matthew Russell, Joel Monaghan and Joe Philbin crossed to give Wolves a 14-6 advantage.

Mantellato and Kevin Larroyer ran in either side of the break for Rovers but Gary Wheeler restored the hosts' lead.

Russell and Graeme Horne then exchanged tries before Ben Currie's score sealed Warrington's victory.

The result saw Tony Smith's side move up to third on the day that marked his the start of his Super League record seventh year in charge.

Kevin Larroyer's second-half try put Hull KR in front for the second time in the game

England international full-back Stefan Ratchford kicked four goals on his return from injury, eight points which proved crucial for Wire at the final whistle.

They fell behind when Robins captain Terry Campese combined with the excellent Kris Welham to get Mantellato over for the first of his two tries.

Both sides were reduced to 12 men temporarily after Warrington's Ashton Sims and Rovers' Tyrone McCarthy traded punches.

Wolves then scored three times in the space of nine minutes, with Russell, Monaghan and Philbin all going over.

Welham's offload fed Mantellato for his second try, but the winger narrowly missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time, so the visitors went in trailing.

They responded after the break when substitute forward Kevin Larroyer marked his 100th match by powering over the line, and Mantellato converted.

But Russell, playing in his new wing role for the Wolves, and scrum-half Wheeler combined to put them back in front moments later, and the former then recovered from a stumble to add his second try.

Horne brought Rovers to within two points after good work from Campese, but Currie settled matters late on, running in from 40 metres to make the win safe.

Warrington Wolves head coach Tony Smith said:

"We were good in patches. We had our moments but we're not quite back on it yet.

"To have 24 points scored against us, you are never overly happy. We found a way to keep ahead but our kicking game and some aspects of our defence need to improve."

"I thought Ben Currie took his try unbelievably well. He showed he can handle (playing at) centre no problem."

Hull KR Coach Chris Chester told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I thought we were dominant for large parts of that game. Just silly errors again in that first half.

"It's very disappointing that we lost the game, but we've taken a lot of positives.

"The effort, I thought, was fantastic for the full 80 minutes."
