Jacob Miller scored two first-half tries for Wakefield against Salford

Wakefield gave their hopes of a top-four finish a major boost with victory away at Salford in the Super 8s.

Jacob Miller scored two tries and Joe Arundel also went over as Wakefield led 22-12 at the break, with Craig Kopczak and Greg Johnson replying for Salford.

Debutant Tyler Randell scored twice after half-time and Bill Tupou also went over as the visitors excelled.

Tyrone McCarthy grabbed a third try for the hosts but they face an uphill battle to reach the play-offs.

Salford are four points adrift of the top four with three games remaining, but Wakefield occupy the final play-off spot and are now a point behind third-placed Hull FC, who were beaten by Leeds on Thursday night.

The damage was done by the visitors when they scored 30 points without reply in a 25-minute spell either side of half-time.

Liam Finn produced a kicking masterclass with nine goals from nine attempts for a personally tally of 18 points, while Randell, who joined the club from NRL side Newcastle Knights last month, used his pace for his two tries to complete an impressive debut.

Salford coach Ian Watson:

"It was an embarrassment - that was not what the club has been about this season. For whatever reason we have lost that bit of desire within the group.

"It feels like we've got to the eights and put our feet up. That's not good enough. When you have the opportunity to be a top-four team you have to grasp that.

"The players need to show some pride in themselves and the team - and we need to rectify that. There will be some honest conversations this week."

Wakefield coach Chris Chester:

"I thought we were comfortable when we got a foothold in the game. We controlled the ball pretty well and were dominant for about 65 minutes.

"I was disappointed with our last-tackle options but that's probably me being a bit picky. We completed sets and worked hard for each other.

"Collectively we were very good and the starting pack was pretty aggressive. We have got to continue working hard."
