Wigan wing Joe Burgess was the architect of both centre Oliver Gildart's tries

Wigan centre Oliver Gildart scored two of Warriors' five tries to see off 2017 Super League runners-up Castleford.

Liam Farrell, George Williams and Tony Clubb also crossed, while Sam Tomkins kicked four goals as Wigan kept up the pressure on leaders St Helens.

Wigan started well, going two tries to nil up through Gildart and Farrell.

Cas then crossed twice inside seven minutes at the end of the half through Oliver Holmes and Garry Lo but, from 14-12 at the break, Wigan raced clear.

The hosts scored 14 unanswered second-half points, capped by Tomkins and Joe Burgess setting up Gildart's spectacular length-of-the-field second, to keep the Tigers fifth after their first defeat in three matches.

Wigan's fourth straight win came - and only Cas's third defeat of the campaign - came after the visitors had taken the lead with a Luke Gale penalty, only for Tomkins to level with his second penalty attempt.

Burgess then burst through Jake Webster's attempted tackle and raced away up the field to set up the platform for Gildart's first try before Farrell took a ball from Williams to spin away from Ben Roberts and touch down, Tomkins adding another goal.

Cas then hit back through Holmes from close range. And, although Wigan had a chance to extend their lead when Willie Isa dropped the ball with the line at his mercy, impressive Papua New Guinea World Cup star Lo then crossed in the corner on his first Super League start for the Tigers.

But Wigan struck quickly after the restart to secure their first win in five attempts over Castleford since the 2016 Challenge Cup quarter-final.

Burgess raced 70 metres before popping a ball inside as he was getting tackled to allow Gildart to grab his second try.

Williams then showed good upper body strength to force his way over after Tomkins' 40/20 had created an opening before Clubb completed the scoring four minutes from time from close range.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane:

"We deserved to win. Keeping them to no points in the second half was good as they are a class team.

"I'm very happy with the last two weeks. We have beaten two very good teams (Cas and Leeds).

"But I still think there is room for improvement. Even if we had won all 11 I would still be saying that.

"They have beaten us the last four times, and I have absolutely no arguments that they beat us fair and square those times. So it was a big victory against a very good team."

Castleford coach Daryl Powell:

"It was frustrating. I don't think we showed the best of ourselves. Wigan deserved to win. We were always chasing the game a little bit.

"We got back into it and then conceded that try right after half-time which was a really soft try to concede.

"We panicked a little bit and made too many errors. Even when we did keep the ball we seemed to give penalties away.

"Garry Lo ran hard and worked hard. He has played a little bit at international level but it was his first Super League game and he fatigued a bit. But I was really pleased with his performance."
