Wigan will go into next Friday's Super League play-off semi-final on the back of an eighth straight victory after narrowly seeing off Hull.

Two converted tries in nine minutes from Carlos Tuimavave and Jamie Shaul earned Hull an interval lead, Wigan having crossed through Gabe Hamlin.

But the Cherry and Whites bounced back after the break to sentence injury-hit Hull to an 11th straight defeat.

Centres Dan Sarginson and Ollie Gildart both went over to complete the scoring.

But young scrum-half Josh Woods' first-half conversion was their only successful kick - and it meant for a tight finish as Hull looked the better team in the final 10 minutes but could not find a way through.

Wigan, who were already guaranteed second place in the table, will now welcome Cas to the DW Stadium in a week's time without a league defeat since losing at home leaders St Helens on 19 July.

Wigan boss Shaun Wane heaped special praise on youngster Craig Mullen after the young winger, who can also play full-back, was thrown in at hooker for over 50 minutes.

Lee Radford's Black and Whites have now failed to win since they beat now relegated Widnes back on 29 June.

Wigan boss Shaun Wane:

"We were disjointed. They were disjointed. It was an end of season game with not much riding on it.

"We wanted to go through these eights unbeaten and we did that in the end, but it was ugly, no question about that.

"I'm very happy with Craig Mullen. He's a winger, or a full-back. We need to look at our system on why we have to do that personally.

"He did a great job. But I should be putting a hooker in there and I'm not. I'm putting a winger in there. Not good enough for me."

Hull coach Lee Radford:

"In terms of effort, I can't question any of them. We genuinely had 17 fit players out there. I am glad it's over and finished.

"It's been an unbelievable challenging time these last 11 weeks after the Wakefield game and you know you are not competing for anything. You're a double glazing salesman trying to sell poor windows to your team really. Bring on 2019.

"I've got a lot of time for Shaun Wane. When I first got this job, he was the first coach to message me and ask if I wanted to go for a coffee and if I needed any advice. He was the first to go out of his way and show that.

"He's a fantastic coach and I genuinely hope they go on and win it. They have a real opportunity to do that and, beyond that, I want him to do well in the role he's taken."
