Joe Greenwood's try put Wigan ahead for the first time

Super League holders Wigan scored six tries to beat Leeds and bounce back from their opening-day defeat.

Dan Sarginson and Ben Flower went over to cancel out early scores from Leeds pair Ash Handley and Brett Ferres.

Tries from Joe Greenwood and Joe Bullock gave Wigan a 22-12 interval lead, and George Williams bundled over to increase their advantage.

Kallum Watkins dived over in the corner for the visitors but Liam Farrell's score made the points safe for Wigan.

Wigan have now won their past seven home meetings with Leeds, who remain without a point after losing at Warrington last weekend.

The hosts started slowly, taking 27 minutes to go in front, but four consecutive tries either side of half-time proved crucial.

It was a first competitive win as Wigan coach for Adrian Lam, while Bullock got his first Super League try for the club on his home debut.

Ferres collected a well-timed Tuimoala Lolohea pass to score at the DW Stadium for the second consecutive season, but Leeds managed just four points in the second half.

Wigan coach Adrian Lam told BBC Radio Manchester:

"At least we had some shape tonight and played a little bit of rugby - I felt last week we didn't do that.

"We probably missed 10 opportunities to score but you've got to walk before you can run, so it was important we got that result.

"It wasn't an ideal start but we rallied and got our way back into the game."

Leeds head coach David Furner told BBC Radio Leeds:

"I thought at times in that first half we put ourselves in a very good position - we defended well, it's just a little bit of discipline where we could be better.

"In the second half we kept defending for each other so that tells me they're trying hard and we just didn't quite execute at times, but certainly there's some positives there.

"You could see when we were trying to get back in the game execution wasn't right - we'll certainly get better from that game, but there was a lot of effort from the players and I can't fault that."
