Warrington ended Castleford's winning start to the 2019 Super League season.

Greg Eden's sixth try of the season put the visitors ahead before Jake Mamo scored twice on his first start for the Wire and Jack Hughes went over.

The home side's 16-4 half-time lead was added to by Ben Murdoch-Masila's try and Stefan Ratchford took his tally with the boot to eight points.

Greg Minikin sneaked in on the right to close the gap, but Wire never looked likely to relinquish their lead.

Cas were looking to equal their best start to a Super League season since 2014 with a fifth successive win, but defeat means St Helens are now the only unbeaten side in 2019.

Warrington, who lost for the first time this year at Catalans last weekend, welcomed back Ben Currie for his first game since April last year following two ACL operations.

Castleford went ahead as Paul McShane's diagonal kick was pushed down by Michael Shenton and Eden collected the loose ball to go over to join Wakefield's Tom Johnstone at the top of the Super League try-scoring charts this season.

Mamo twice finished off well-worked moves in the left-hand corner, with the latter try seeing Ratchford reach 1,000 career points from the resulting conversion.

Blake Austin's high kick saw Mamo turn provider as he claimed the ball and quickly offloaded to Hughes, who spun away from a tackle to go over to help Warrington to a 12-point lead at the interval.

Murdoch-Masila powered his way over for Warrington's fourth try before Minikin latched on to Peter Mata'utia pass to run-in on the right to reduce the arrears to 14 points, but that was as good as it got for Castleford who were beaten for the first time this season.

Warrington coach Steve Price:

"Castleford have been the best team to date, I'm very pleased to come away with the win.

"There were a lot of guys hurting from the performance last week (against Catalans Dragons), so that shows the character and belief in the team.

"It's been a really good start. We had a slight hiccup last week but we're in pretty good shape. Things are looking promising at the moment."

Castleford coach Daryl Powell:

"I thought we were pretty good tonight to be honest. The opportunities we got in good attacking positions and put down hurt us.

"We were playing against a team who had pretty much everybody out there. If you look at the respective benches, you could see we were down on troops.

"I thought we were fantastic in terms of effort and spirit, I'm proud of them. I'm never pleased to lose a game but I'm closer to knowing what I've got than I was last week. The steel and spirit in the club is outstanding."
