Marc Sneyd kicked 14 points as Hull FC pulled away in the second half to beat Wakefield and move above them into third place in the Super League table.
Hull scored early through Albert Kelly and survived an early Gareth Ellis yellow card to reach half-time ahead.
A quickfire double from Joe Westerman and Sneyd's accuracy from the tee then helped them stretch clear.
Wakefield's Max Jowitt did score his second try of the game but it proved to be a mere consolation.
When Kelly went under the posts in the opening minutes the Black and Whites looked to be firing, but Ellis' sin-binning gave Trinity the chance to seize the momentum.
They made the most of their man advantage when Jowitt touched down, but when the numbers were evened up Connor Wyne's try and the boot of Sneyd put the home side back ahead.
Justin Horo's score got the visitors into the contest before the break but Lee Radford's team had just too much after the restart as Wakefield's pass completion rate dropped from 88 per cent in the first half to 36 in the second period.
It is now four wins in five Super League matches for Hull FC - and that one defeat was their 62-16 mauling at leaders St Helens on Easter Monday.
Hull FC head coach Lee Radford:
"It probably wasn't the best advert for the game but it was a really good advert for hard work. The grit and determination was all we could ask for. I still don't think we've got the ball rolling. We've just found a way to do it. But to start building a bit of momentum would be nice.
"Gareth Ellis was outstanding for us again but Albert Kelly took a stinger early on and was holding his left arm for the rest of the game. You never know what the roof is with Alby, he does some really special things.
"It was all about getting that win. We dug in really hard for each other. We're sitting third now and everyone's looking at the top two teams who are playing really well. But we're happy with third."
Wakefield head coach Chris Chester:
"We gave ourselves a chance and at half-time we said that, if we can get to 80 per cent, we can do a job. We came out second half and we were 36 per cent. That's woeful.
"We've got too many players on the pitch just making stuff up. We had too many guys looking for that headline pass. We needed to stick to the game plan.
"I am really disappointed. We were in the game at half-time going in at 14-10 down. But our approach to that second half just wasn't good enough.
"At 36 per cent we wouldn't beat West Hull, never mind Hull FC."
