Super League leaders St Helens overpowered Wakefield Trinity to reach the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup.

Saints punished a host of errors by the visitors in the first half, with Lachlan Coote, Tommy Makinson, Morgan Knowles and Regan Grace all scoring.

Tyler Randell touched down after the break to reduce the deficit to 16 but that was as good as it got for Trinity.

Tries from Zeb Taia, Mark Percival, Jonny Lomax and Kevin Naiqama sealed victory.

Saints, six points clear at the top of the table, are looking to reach a first Challenge Cup final since 2008.

They got off to a perfect start when Coote went over inside the first five minutes but Wakefield quickly levelled through a try from teenage debutant Jack Croft.

However, Saints soon got on top of the game and Grace's easy finish just before the break, when Ryan Hampshire was in the sin bin for Wakefield, looked to have put the game to bed.

The hosts started the second half in uncharacteristically lax fashion but came back to life in the final 20 minutes to add some gloss to the scoreline.

Justin Holbrook's side join Warrington and Hull FC in the hat for the semi-finals, with the draw taking place live on BBC Two after the all-Championship clash between Bradford Bulls and Halifax on Sunday (14:45 BST).

St Helens coach Justin Holbrook told BBC Sport:

"They gave us a tough game. They were missing a few and we had some guys back.

"We've been able to stay patient and hang in there and take opportunities when they present themselves.

"We were driven last year but just not good enough. We're on the right track."

Wakefield coach Chris Chester told BBC Sport:

"We were beaten by the better side. They executed really well and we didn't.

"We've unearthed a young kid today in Crofty. He scored the first try for us and was very good defensively.

"The young players have learnt a lot from this. They were learning on the job.

"We have to manage the next four or five weeks until we get some players back. We have half of our salary cap in the stands."
