Super League: Huddersfield Giants 40-26 Hull FC - McGillvary helps hosts end losing run

Jermaine McGillvary scored four tries as Huddersfield Giants overcame Hull FC to end a seven-game losing run.

Carlos Tuimavave sent Hull ahead but McGillvary and Nathan Peats put the Giants in front soon after.

Mitieli Vulikijapani and Jordan Lane put Hull ahead but Will Pryce, Luke Yates and McGillvary gave the hosts back a six-point lead at the break.

McGillvary scored his third and fourth either side of Vulikijapani's second before Chris Satae's late consolation.

Hull's Andre Savelio and Huddersfield's Josh Jones both clashed after the final hooter and were shown red cards.

The victory, just Huddersfield's fourth of the campaign, was their first since beating winless Leigh Centurions 44-6 on 23 May.

Hull, who were playing their first game for almost a month due to a series of Covid-related postponements, see their four-game winning run come to an end.

Pryce, son of former Great Britain international Leon, scored his first try for the club in their narrow defeat by Wigan last time around and the 18-year-old added to his tally following a sensational weaving run into the corner just before the break.

It was a second half to forget for Hull, who also had prop Ligi Sao sent to the bin on 55 minujtes for a high tackle on Sam Hewitt.

A comfortable performance for the Giants was capped off by McGillvary's dominant display, with Leroy Cudjoe also getting on the scoresheet in his 300th game for Huddersfield, just before Satae's late score.

Huddersfield Giants head coach Ian Watson told BBC Radio Leeds:

"They deserve what they got today, the boys, because they've been getting better and better. The biggest thing is that they are playing as a team.

"I thought our middles were outstanding today defensively. It's individual attitude and effort. The boys want to work really hard for each other.

"I think we came up against a better team than what we played [Wigan] last week but they've handled it really well."

Hull FC boss Brett Hodgson told BBC Radio Humberside:

"It's very disappointing. We prepared very well coming into this game. But we weren't willing to apply enough pressure. Our set finishes were either a brilliant kick for a try or a set where we failed to build any pressure.

"Our discipline let us down. We don't make any excuses, we were outplayed today. [Not playing for four weeks] is an excuse and we need to be better than that.

"We were way off with many errors today. We should have been more clinical with what we wanted to do."
